{"id":25355,"date":"2018-11-09T15:00:48","date_gmt":"2018-11-09T15:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=25355"},"modified":"2018-11-09T15:00:48","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T15:00:48","slug":"today-29-years-ago-the-berlin-wall-fell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/today-29-years-ago-the-berlin-wall-fell\/","title":{"rendered":"The broken wall that united Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_25358\" style=\"width: 441px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25358\" class=\"wp-image-25358 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2018\/11\/berlin-wall.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"292\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Picture: Courtesy of\u00a0University of Minnesota Institute of Advanced Studies \/ The National Guard<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>On this day in 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, arguably changing the world forever.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This significant event ended more than 28 years of hostile conflict between West and East Germany; it symbolised the Iron Curtain that separated Western Europe and the Soviet Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The official reason behind the construction of the wall was to avoid Western &#8220;fascists\u201d from entering in Eastern Berlin and consequently weaken the socialist state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The transit between the two blocks was strictly limited to a few checkpoints. &#8220;Checkpoint Charlie&#8221; was one of the main crossing points used by diplomats, Soviet army militants and foreign visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During these decades, many unsuccessfully tried to cross the wall, at least 171 people were killed in their attempts. Yet, accomplishing this mission was not impossible.
