{"id":25380,"date":"2018-11-10T16:39:12","date_gmt":"2018-11-10T16:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=25380"},"modified":"2018-11-10T16:39:12","modified_gmt":"2018-11-10T16:39:12","slug":"parole-board-to-launch-new-recruitment-exercise-in-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/parole-board-to-launch-new-recruitment-exercise-in-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Parole Board to push for diversity in 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25382\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2018\/11\/prison-553836_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>The new chairwoman of the <\/b><b>Parole Board<\/b><b> has stated it is a \u201csignificant concern\u201d that none of its 240 members are black.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will Aslan, of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Parole Board<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> exclusively told the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Voice of London:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cWe will be working with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ministry of Justice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to ensure we attract candidates from a range of backgrounds, as a step towards a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Parole Board<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> membership that better reflects the community it serves.\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The board which decides when prisoners can leave prison has an \u201cunconscious bias\u201d in its recruitment process, according to its chair. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Caroline Corby has said that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">J<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ohn Worboys<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> case<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had caused a \u201closs of confidence\u201d amongst board members after Nick Hardwick, the previous chairman was forced to quit when the High Court overturned the board\u2019s decision to free the serial sex offender.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Latest figures show that only 4% of members are from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BAME (Black, Asian, and minority ethnic) background.
