{"id":25400,"date":"2018-11-11T12:11:19","date_gmt":"2018-11-11T12:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=25400"},"modified":"2018-11-11T12:11:19","modified_gmt":"2018-11-11T12:11:19","slug":"reasons-to-remember-making-a-new-world-at-the-imperial-war-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/reasons-to-remember-making-a-new-world-at-the-imperial-war-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Reasons to remember: Making a New World at the Imperial War Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>November 11th, 2018 will mark the centenary of the armistice of Compi\u00e8gne, which set the cease-fire of WWI.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many celebrations are set to take place through the weekend all around London and the world.<\/p>\n<p>Among the others, the Imperial War Museum\u2019s <em>Making a New World<\/em> particularly stands out.<\/p>\n<p>In a way, the IWM is a product of the First World War itself.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the museum first opened in 1917, when the conflict hadn\u2019t chased yet. Their descriptions lead the listener through the journey of that day. From the announcement to the joy spreading in the streets, to the scenes of happiness in Trafalgar square. A hundred years later, the emotion in their voice is still alive and vibrant.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25445\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2018\/11\/C64D480F-8746-421A-88DB-8F31A11E1D28-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"487\" height=\"365\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Renewal \u2013 life after the First World War in photographs<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The photographic exhibition, divided into three spaces, tells the story of the reconstruction. Self-reconstruction is presented, along with the process of rebuilding the many bombarded cities and reshaping the world. A variety of images shows the human side of the \u201cafter\u201d events.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25452\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2018\/11\/BB278429-42B3-4139-A9B2-E2CE487A89E6-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"493\" height=\"370\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Moments of Silence<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The multimedia display focuses on the planned but never-realised Hall of Remembrance proposed by the British government after the end of the war. The purpose is to create a space to showcase remembrance rituals. A sign on the door asks the visitors to \u201cthink about how, and why, you might remember\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>After my visit, I was lucky enough to meet the writer and documentary producer Richard Van Emden, whose last book <em>1918: The Decisive Year in Soldiers\u2019 own Word and Photographs\u00a0<\/em>just came out last month. The book is made out of a collection of soldiers\u2019 diaries and photographs.
