{"id":26425,"date":"2018-11-17T21:26:14","date_gmt":"2018-11-17T21:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=26425"},"modified":"2018-11-17T21:26:14","modified_gmt":"2018-11-17T21:26:14","slug":"rebellion-day-climate-change-activists-take-over-five-london-bridges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/rebellion-day-climate-change-activists-take-over-five-london-bridges\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Rebellion Day&#8221;: climate change activists take over five London bridges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Thousands of protesters blocked several bridges in London and more than 80 were arrested in a &#8220;day of rebellion&#8221; for climate change.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Rebellion Day&quot;: five London bridges blocked over climate change\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jP3gzjTIYqM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Demonstrations started at 10am on Saturday and followed a series of non-violent direct actions by the Extinction Rebellion campaign that began on 31 October. The campaign calls for the UK Government to take greater action against the \u201cEcological crisis caused by climate change, pollution and habitat destruction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>More than 6,000 people blocked Lambeth, Westminster, Waterloo, Blackfriars and Southwark bridges this morning and then moved on to gather altogether in Parliament Square, where the original demonstration was planned to take place. They had a &#8216;Citizens Assembly&#8217; and a closing ceremony where they planted trees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need radical political leadership, who genuinely consider our future, who put power over profit because that&#8217;s what&#8217;s at stake. Climate change is a global issue. It will affect us all, although right now the bitter irony is that it has had the biggest impact on those who have done the least to create it,&#8221; said Jackson Harries, one of the activists at Westminster Bridge, in his speech.<\/p>\n<p>During the day, the Declaration of Rebellion was read and repeated by all the attendees in all five bridges. It was <a href=\"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/declaration-of-rebellion-civil-disobedience-in-the-name-of-climate-change\/\">delivered to the Government<\/a> on the 8 November, warning them of upcoming civil disobedience.<\/p>\n<p>Other actions this week included blockage to the government\u2019s energy department headquarters, the unveiling of a banner saying \u201cClimate change \u2013 we are fucked\u201d in Westminster bridge and a Queer Party to save the Amazon that shut down the Brazilian Embassy on Thursday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The ceremony and tree planting at parliament square was beautiful and such a fitting end to today&#39;s rebellion. I guess it&#8217;s just another thing to try. I feel like I&#8217;ve tried everything else so here I am.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The UN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/oct\/08\/global-warming-must-not-exceed-15c-warns-landmark-un-report\">warned of a climate change catastrophe<\/a> in a report published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), giving humanity 12 years to act and stop the Earth warming beyond 1.5\u00b0C, which presents a serious danger, both to humans and wildlife. They have also reported the Earth is more reactive to fossil fuel emissions than previously thought and suggests they must be reduced by 25 per cent more than previously approximated.<\/p>\n<p>Another demonstrator, who wishes to remain anonymous, said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t necessarily agree with blocking a bridge but I don&#8217;t see more options at the moment. I am usually a rule-follower, but I am here because I have grown children and I want to have grown grandchildren one day. Are you mad?&#8221; at a group of people who were holding a banner for pedestrians to see and get engaged.
