Fruit machines, in betting shops and online are all illegal for under 18s, but the internet is where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/gambling-addiction-is-trapping-children-report-warns-g6sbngkj6\">children spend an average of \u00a316 a week<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYounger generations are growing up quicker,\u201d 18-year-old Tom Huianu told Voice of London. Recently graduated from Rutlish School, Huianu explained how a culture of gambling at his school started young, with playground games like \u2018penny up,\u2019 where winners would flick coins and win small sums of money. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mike Dixon, CEO of public health charity Addaction told Voice of London, \u201cThis is another big wake up call. We need to act now before a new generation gets into serious trouble with gambling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"s1\">A further 70,000 are at risk of getting hooked as they are becoming increasingly exposed to gambling advertisements on the internet and on television.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I do not understand why the 9pm watershed does not apply to gambling adverts. There are so many children that watch sports during the day and all that is advertised is gambling sign up offers. He told Voice of London, \u201cRight now it\u2019s too hard for young people to get help. We need a proper levy on gambling industry profits to pay for targeted support for young people and better education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoolsAWilson\/status\/1065308958804586497<\/p>\n<p>Dixon noted how some simple changes within the gambling industry would make a big difference to these numbers. \u201cGambling companies shouldn\u2019t take credit card payments or target young people with in-play gambling and irresponsible advertising.
