However, with more than 34% of children in England diagnosed with obesity by the time they leave primary school, the figures are likely to rise in the following years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Type 2 diabetes is a common and lifelong condition \u201cthat causes the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood to become too high\u201d according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NHS<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Symptoms can vary from tiredness and increased thirst to serious problems with the heart, eyes and nerves. In the most extreme cases, it can lead to amputations, blindness or kidney failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Genetics, family history and ethnic background can also lead to developing Type 2 diabetes. However, most young people with the disease already have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/type-1-diabetes\/about-type-1-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Type 1 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which is an autoimmune disease and not connected with age or obesity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26966\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2018\/11\/image3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"651\" height=\"840\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s next?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many organisations are calling for action and urging the government to implement changes. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org.uk\/about-us\/news\/children-young-adults-type-2-rise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bridget Turner at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Diabetes UK:<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u201cWe need to encourage healthy living by providing clear and easy to understand nutritional information about the products we are all buying, and protect children from adverts for foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar. Children and young people with Type 2 diabetes should have access to expert treatment by healthcare professionals trained to manage and research the condition and the challenges it presents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26967\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2018\/11\/image2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"653\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">London\u2019s mayor, Sadiq Khan told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-46306198\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BBC<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that he wants to tackle the &#8220;ticking time bomb&#8221; of child obesity in the capital by implementing a junk food ad ban across London\u2019s public transport.
