That is the question."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pornography or porn as it&#8217;s more affectionately known is a love-hate relationship shared by most.\u00a0In April 2018, a law was passed under the Digital Economy Act 2017, where age verification was to be made mandatory to those wanting to watch porn online.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27670\" style=\"width: 583px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27670\" class=\"wp-image-27670\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2018\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2018-11-30-at-15.47.38.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"347\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Credit: Victoria Locke<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, with pornographic websites failure to abide by new rules the plans have been pushed back to \u201cspring next year\u201d says minister for digital and creative industries, Margot James MP, from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/dcms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DCMS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The UK government has been trying to restrict access to porn since 2015. Under the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2017\/30\/part\/3\/enacted\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Digital Economy Act 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, all commercial porn providers must have age verification tools installed on their websites meaning every pornographic website user must provide ID showing they are over 18. Although no money will be taken from the account in question, it means that the sites will have access to personal and potentially sensitive information. Porn is famously an industry where people remain anonymous so needing to verify their age through identification would potentially cause problems for porn consumers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MP\u2019s are keen to get the legislation underway with says Margot James MP telling <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Independent:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/porn-site-age-verification-uk-pornhub-sex-online-adult-video-government-id-a8631886.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It has taken longer than I would have liked, but I\u2019d balance that with a confidence that we\u2019ve got it right<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In compliance to the impending legislation, MindGeek, a company owning many well-known porn websites such as PornHub, RedTube and YouPorn, announced back in March their launch of AgeID, an online age verification tool. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ageid.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AgeID <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is slowly being implemented across MindGeek\u2019s own porn websites, it acts as a nightclub bouncer where the user must provide a scanned document to verify their age in this one-off process.
