{"id":30395,"date":"2019-10-23T13:00:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T12:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=30395"},"modified":"2019-10-23T13:00:13","modified_gmt":"2019-10-23T12:00:13","slug":"londons-homeless-youth-crisis-broken-families-a-common-cause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/londons-homeless-youth-crisis-broken-families-a-common-cause\/","title":{"rendered":"London\u2019s Homeless Youth Crisis: broken families a common cause"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>According to researches last year more than 100,000 young people asked for help because they were experiencing homelessness \u2013 or were at risk of sleeping on the streets.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Centrepoint \u2013 the charity for young homeless persons \u2013 has revealed that 103,000 people in the UK aged between 16-24 approached their local councils for support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The research was based on findings released by the 67% of Greater London councils who responded to freedom of information requests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2017\/18 local councils in London were approached by more than 9,000 young homeless. Only 25% were accepted as statutory homeless and were given a place to stay and the support they needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And 75% were given alternative care. This was often an attempt to mediate between the young person and their family \u2013 with an aim to move them back into the family home or helping with a deposit for alternative accommodation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-30398\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/10\/Youth-Homelessness-1-410x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although there are many reasons why a young person in the UK can end up sleeping rough, the most common factors which contributed to this seemed to concern family issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being forced out of the family home after an argument or having parents who are no longer willing \u2013 or indeed able \u2013 to care for their child or children is, according to the research, very common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The researchers also found that termination of tenancy agreements and contracts by unsympathetic landlords; physical and\/or mental issues; drug and\/or alcohol addictions or leaving care homes were not unusual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Centrepoint stated that the impact homelessness has on young people is different compared to that faced by older homeless people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They established that the young homeless are at an increased risk of developing mental health issues including depression, anxiety and anorexia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And the charity also learned that because of their situation, young displaced persons are unable to have access to proper education \u2013 making it harder for them to find a job in both the short and longer term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the lack of funding for housing and access to benefits, it was learned that the system is too complicated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seyi Obakin \u2013 Chief Executive of Centrepoint \u2013 told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: \u201cThe government has been increasingly vocal on the issues of homelessness. But without extra funding for councils to meet their new obligations, they are risking setting councils up to fail.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was announced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/what-we-do\/housing-and-land\/homelessness\/mayors-rough-sleeping-services\">Greater London Authority\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">this winter that the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, will launch a \u00a32.2 million \u201cWinter Programme Fund\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Khan has pledged to support local authorities and to work on finding a long-term plan to help solve the problem of youth homelessness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Words: Giulia Frau | Subbing:\u00a0Scott Mathew<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Infographic: Giulia Frau.
