{"id":30466,"date":"2019-10-24T12:50:09","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T11:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=30466"},"modified":"2019-10-24T12:50:09","modified_gmt":"2019-10-24T11:50:09","slug":"from-the-front-lines-northern-irelands-right-to-choose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/from-the-front-lines-northern-irelands-right-to-choose\/","title":{"rendered":"From the front lines: Northern Ireland&#8217;s right to choose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Northern Ireland officially decriminalised abortion following an attempt at a constructive sitting of the Northern Ireland Assembly last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The nationalist Sinn Fein party boycotted the assembly beforehand along with the Green and Alliance Party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This left the Democratic Unionist Party wholly reliant on the nationalist Social Democratic Labour Party to be present in the sitting, in order\u00a0to pass the pro-life bill, due to the Northern Ireland Act of 1998.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead, the SDLP left the assembly and in doing so made it impossible for any proceedings to take place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the DUP unable to pass any legislation to block the new abortion laws, they too exited the assembly in defeat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unable to form a sitting assembly to oppose the Westminster legislation by the deadline, abortion became decriminalised at midnight on Tuesday, marking a significant date in Northern Ireland\u2019s history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A region where abortion laws had remained unchanged since 1861.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It joins the rest of the UK where decriminalisation laws have been in place for the last 51 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30469\" style=\"width: 533px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30469\" class=\"wp-image-30469 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-24-at-12.05.18.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"390\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ferris Shaw<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joyous pro-choice advocates were heard cheering outside Stormont, behind devoted pro-life advocates firmly presenting their sentiments through \u201cNot in Our Name\u201d signs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kerry, a mother of two from Antrim, said: \u201cIt\u2019s about time, but it\u2019s a sad day when you realise, we had to have Westminster kind of force us to do this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA basic right for women somehow still facing opposition in 2019? What does that say about Belfast, Northern Ireland at that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rebecca, of Londonderry, said: \u201cAbortion is murder, it\u2019s that simple. All the science today shows that that a baby is an individual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou can convolute the situation, or story or context as much as you want, but at the end of the day, that\u2019s a baby that no one has a right to kill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m not even religious, but I can tell you, trying to choose when it goes from killing a cell to killing a person, is playing God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier this year, legislation passed in Westminster stating that abortion would automatically become decriminalised in Northern Ireland unless its devolved government was\u00a0restored by October 21, 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prior to this, abortion had only been possible if the mother\u2019s life was in jeopardy. Or permanent and significant danger was posed to their physical or mental well-being as a direct result of the pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Looking into the future for Northern Ireland, Tim, a Queens University\u00a0student, summarised his view on the day:\u00a0\u201cWhilst I\u2019m happy to see NI following the progressive trajectory of the rest\u00a0of the UK, the underlying problem behind today\u2019s shamble is that no\u00a0matter the issue at hand, topic or anything, NI politics will always revolve\u00a0around nationalists versus unionists.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even if parties agree on an issue,\u00a0they will fight it out to hinder the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Words: Ferris Shaw | Subbing: Michelle Del Rey | Images: Ferris Shaw<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Ireland officially decriminalised abortion following an attempt at a constructive sitting of the Northern Ireland Assembly last week.
