{"id":31002,"date":"2019-10-28T17:06:27","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T17:06:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=31002"},"modified":"2019-10-28T17:06:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T17:06:27","slug":"lorry-driver-maurice-robinson-appeared-in-court-on-charge-of-manslaughter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/lorry-driver-maurice-robinson-appeared-in-court-on-charge-of-manslaughter\/","title":{"rendered":"Lorry driver in court on charge of manslaughter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Lorry driver, Maurice Robinson, has appeared in Chelmsford Magistrates\u2019 Court, accused of 39 counts of manslaughter including conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and money laundering.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maurice Robinson, 25, from Craigavon, was\u00a0charged with the manslaughter of 39 migrants who were found dead in a refrigerated trailer in Essex.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Besides the accusation of human trafficking and the breach of immigration law, he was also charged with two other counts, money laundering and concealing criminal property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prosecutor Ogheneruona Iguyovwe told the court, Robinson\u2019s conspiracy charges are like a \u2018global ring\u2019 which involves \u2018the movement of a large number of illegal immigrants into the UK&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Robinson was remanded in custody at the Magistrates\u2019 Court in Chelmsford after his appearance via video link. He\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was not asked to indicate a plea and will next appear at the Old Bailey on 25 November.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prime Minister, Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Priti Patel joined at Thurrock Council\u2019s office, signed a book of condolence and paid their respects to the 39 victims by laying flowers in the nearby Mulberry garden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-31011 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/10\/\uc2a4\ud06c\ub9b0\uc0f7-2019-10-28-\uc624\ud6c4-4.56.47.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"547\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31025\" style=\"width: 517px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31025\" class=\" wp-image-31025\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/10\/109430484_03c7bdad-d530-4d57-b73a-044a3902f2ef.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"507\" height=\"285\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credits to: Essex police<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boris Johnson said with a strong will, &#8220;the whole world has been shocked by this tragedy. In condemning the callousness of those responsible for this crime, we in the government of the United Kingdom resolve to do everything in our power to bring the perpetrators to justice.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Essex Fire and Crime Commissioner, Roger Hirst added, &#8220;We recognise the public concern around the incident and thank for the support from different departments at this difficult time. We can assure that everybody is working together to achieve the outcome of the victims deserve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Essex Police initially claimed the 39 victims &#8211; 31 men and eight women- were Chinese nationals.
