{"id":31254,"date":"2019-10-31T15:02:27","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T15:02:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=31254"},"modified":"2019-10-31T15:02:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T15:02:27","slug":"she-said-breaking-the-harvey-weinstein-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/she-said-breaking-the-harvey-weinstein-story\/","title":{"rendered":"She Said: Breaking the Harvey Weinstein story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>You could hear a pin drop in the Emmanuel Centre as <i>New York Times<\/i> investigative journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey recounted the years leading up to 5th October 2017 &#8211; the day they broke the story accusing Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Update:\u00a0<\/strong>As of 11th December 2019, Jodi Kantor and Meghan Twohey have reported that\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harvey Weinstein and his team have come to a tentative settlement agreement of $25 million with 30 of his accusers &#8211; a mix of actresses and former employees.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0This deal wouldn\u2019t require Weinstein to admit any wrongdoing or pay his accusers himself, and would bring an end to nearly every lawsuit against him and his company.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The $25 million (\u00a318.6 million) is part of a $47 million (\u00a335.1 million) bankruptcy settlement coming from the insurance companies that worked with Weinstein\u2019s now-bankrupt company, The Weinstein Company.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">$6.2 million (\u00a34.6 million) would be split between eighteen of Weinstein\u2019s alleged victims &#8211; no one receiving more than $500,000 (\u00a3373.4). The other $18.5 million (\u00a313.8 million) would be kept \u201cfor those who were part of a class action lawsuit case, the New York attorney general\u2019s suit, and any future claimants&#8221;,\u00a0The\u00a0New York Times reporters disclosed.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0New York Times\u00a0reported that while many of the women aren&#8217;t content with the idea of a settlement, they aren&#8217;t sure what else they could do. Many are outside the statute of limitations, or haven&#8217;t been able to find another legal alternative.\u00a0Not taking their share of the settlement might mean they&#8217;ll end up empty-handed.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One lawyer felt that his client was being forced into the deal. He revealed that if his client didn\u2019t take her cut of the money, she was told Weinstein could use it for his own defense costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/11\/us\/harvey-weinstein-settlement.html\">Harvey Weinstein has a separate trial set for early January involving the accounts of two women. One woman has accused Weinstein of raping her in New York City hotel in 2013. The second woman alleged he forced oral sex on her at his townhouse in 2006.\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Weinstein still denies any wrongdoing or nonconsenual activity.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligencesquared.com\/events\/jodi-kantor-and-megan-twohey-on-breaking-the-harvey-weinstein-story\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The event &#8216;Breaking the Harvey Weinstein Story&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was a collaboration between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Intelligence Squared as part of their new series, Intelligence Talks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kantor and Twohey were promoting their new book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She Said<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which details the three-year journey leading up to publishing details about the former Hollywood producer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Weinstein is facing a trial in the United States where he stands accused of rape. He denies these charges and has previously denied other allegations of sexual misconduct.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31265\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31265\" class=\"wp-image-31265\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/10\/IMG_0684-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left to right: Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey, Carrie Gracie, Laura Madden, Rowena Chiu, Zelda Perkins \/ Source: Derrian Douglas<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alongside the women were three others with their own stories about Weinstein; Laura Madden, a former production executive at Weinstein\u2019s Miramax Films in London; Rowena Chiu, a former assistant of Weinstein\u2019s in 1998; Zelda Perkins, a former assistant of Weinstein\u2019s and current campaigner against non-disclosure agreements (NDAs); and Carrie Gracie, a BBC News presenter serving as the chair for the talk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The talk mirrored the contents of the book &#8212; the early days when their notes were just speculation, the hesitation of the interviewees to share their stories, the moment Harvey Weinstein himself barged into the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NYT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offices, and the day they hit &#8216;publish&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While sat in a semicircle the women discussed the reason for writing the novel. Kantor called the book an \u201cX-ray of how power works\u201d, and in their fight to uncover more and more information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The women spoke of their trauma after alleging they were assaulted by Weinstein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Madden shared, &#8216;I felt deep shame, deep humiliation and a sense of responsibility for what happened to me&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chiu shared the challenges she faced in speaking out. &#8216;The story is no longer your own&#8230; the story walks away from you and you\u2019re no longer the protagonist you thought you were,&#8217; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After confiding in her colleagues and family about the alleged assault, she thought the situation would be handled immediately. &#8216;I really thought it was that simple,&#8217; she confessed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both Chiu and Perkins revealed they were forced into signing an NDA but both Chiu and Perkins have since broken their NDA\u2019s by speaking out against Weinstein.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The women\u2019s stories are among others featured in the raw and honest novel. The novel includes accounts from both well-known and unknown women in the film industry, but it\u2019s the unknown women who are the reason the story has made such an impact, the women agreed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31267\" style=\"width: 319px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31267\" class=\" wp-image-31267\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/10\/fullsizeoutput_28-946x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"309\" height=\"334\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Derrian Douglas<\/p><\/div>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She Said<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> includes real conversations and letters between the interviewees and the reporters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The publishing of the story evoked different reactions from each woman. At first, Perkins felt \u201cdisappointed because I didn\u2019t feel it was big enough.\u201d She revealed the contents of the article wouldn\u2019t &#8216;get him&#8217;, but conceded she felt different two days later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chiu had a &#8216;holy crap moment&#8217;. For so long she thought the story wouldn\u2019t come out, and when it did &#8216;it sparked a global movement&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When asked what has changed in the two years since the news story broke, Madden and Perkins agreed &#8216;everything but nothing has changed.
