{"id":31324,"date":"2019-11-01T12:36:35","date_gmt":"2019-11-01T12:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=31324"},"modified":"2019-11-01T12:36:35","modified_gmt":"2019-11-01T12:36:35","slug":"farage-launches-brexit-party-election-19-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/farage-launches-brexit-party-election-19-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Farage launches Brexit Party election &#8217;19 campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Brexit party general election campaign officially launched this morning at a press conference in London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Party chairman Richard Tice MEP opened the launch saying:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We stand on a simple slogan: Change politics for good.<\/p>\n<p>And changing politics needs to start here.<\/p>\n<p>In this stinking, rotten borough of Westminster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He also said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The shambles of the parliamentary games here in Westminster in recent weeks and months, highlights the need for major political reform.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s only the Brexit party that can be trusted on that political reform.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">There is two weeks to put together a Leave alliance and it has to be done. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3KHJmNUh9z\">pic.twitter.com\/3KHJmNUh9z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nigel Farage (@Nigel_Farage) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Nigel_Farage\/status\/1190236180467650560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 1, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The young political party &#8211; formed only this January &#8211; took 29 seats at the European Parliament elections in May.<\/p>\n<p>This included two London constituencies.<\/p>\n<p>More than 400,000 Londoners voted for Nigel Farage&#8217;s hard-Brexit backing party at that election.<\/p>\n<p>But the Lib Dems won three seats with the backing of more than 600,000 London voters.<\/p>\n<p>In a ferocious attack on the prime minister Boris Johnson, party leader Mr Farage said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have two weeks to form a leave alliance.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of the vote being split is very real.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Richard Tice says the electoral system is \u201ccorrupt\u201d and open to \u201chuge abuse\u201d. Specifically referencing postal voting in Peterborough by-election. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GQig7ow8AL\">pic.twitter.com\/GQig7ow8AL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Johnston (@johnjohnstonmi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnjohnstonmi\/status\/1190217063853363200?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 1, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He referred to the Peterborough by-election held on June 6.<\/p>\n<p>Labour won the East of England seat despite most voters backing the leave-supporting Tory and Brexit parties.<\/p>\n<p>The Tories and the Brexit party took over 50% of the popular vote in that by-election.<\/p>\n<p>The 55-year-old and one-time United Kingdom Independence Party leader told reporters:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It [Peterborough] could have gone to leavers but went to remainers. They [the Conservatives] need to understand the logic of a pact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He also said that Professor of Politics at Strathclyde University and political scientist Sir John Curtis had said that &#8220;the mathematics of this works.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Tice, who co-founded Leave.EU with controversial UKIP donor Aaron Banks, also said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need electoral reform. The first-past-the-post &#8230; disenfranchises millions and millions of voters up and down the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We need to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ChangePoliticsForGood?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ChangePoliticsForGood<\/a>. To do that, we need electoral reform. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dPoQEjwGcQ\">pic.twitter.com\/dPoQEjwGcQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Brexit Party (@brexitparty_uk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brexitparty_uk\/status\/1190219902528958466?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 1, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Asked if he would rather see a &#8220;Remain party&#8221; win the election and stay in the EU, than have the Tories win and implement the PM&#8217;s deal, Mr Farage told talkRadio:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is probably our best chance and maybe our last chance of actually getting a genuine Brexit delivered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said that in the event of Mr Johnson&#8217;s &#8220;treaty going through&#8221; there would inevitably be a second referendum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m offering a way forward that if Boris Johnson takes, he&#8217;ll win\u00a0<em>and<\/em> win with a big majority.<\/p>\n<p>If he chooses not to do it, then we&#8217;ll stand in every seat across the country.
