{"id":32387,"date":"2019-11-10T17:08:46","date_gmt":"2019-11-10T17:08:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=32387"},"modified":"2019-11-10T17:08:46","modified_gmt":"2019-11-10T17:08:46","slug":"xr-set-sinking-house-in-thames","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/xr-set-sinking-house-in-thames\/","title":{"rendered":"XR set &#8216;sinking house&#8217; in Thames"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A model house was seen bobbing up and down in the River Thames \u2013 before sinking, in the latest stunt by Extinction Rebellion.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the ban issued by the Met Police, to halt the eco-protestors in the capital throughout October, was ruled unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>Passer-by\u2019s saw the \u201cclassic suburban home\u201d \u2013 bedecked with drainpipes, an aerial and a cowl-topped chimney \u2013 slowly submerge into the water near to Tower Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, XR claimed the protest was to draw attention to rising sea-levels and urge those standing in the general election to address the climate emergency.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">1\/ River Thames <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/London?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#London<\/a>. A classic suburban house was seen floating down the river, sinking into the water in yet another attempt to send an SOS to the government on climate inaction and draw attention to the threat humans face from climate change and rising sea levels. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cMaOWhNMMe\">pic.twitter.com\/cMaOWhNMMe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Extinction Rebellion Families (@XRFamilies) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/XRFamilies\/status\/1193499925490868224?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The event took place as areas in northern and central regions of England face severe flooding brought on by constant heavy rain, which has seen a month\u2019s worth of rainfall dropping in a day.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, hundreds of homes were evacuated, and one fatality has been reported.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the disaster, XR stated: \u201cUnless action is taken to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero these tragedies are set to worsen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They followed it up with haunting words for Londoners:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder new sea level rise projections, Stratford, Barking and Dagenham and large swathes of South and West London, East Anglia, Essex and Kent will be underwater by 2050.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>Despite our government\u2019s denial, this is a national disaster eeking ever closer to the capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Words: Dan Branston<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A model house was seen bobbing up and down in the River Thames \u2013 before sinking, in the latest stunt by Extinction Rebellion.
