{"id":32499,"date":"2019-11-12T09:00:23","date_gmt":"2019-11-12T09:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=32499"},"modified":"2019-11-12T09:00:23","modified_gmt":"2019-11-12T09:00:23","slug":"lemzi-londons-newest-rising-rapper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/lemzi-londons-newest-rising-rapper\/","title":{"rendered":"Lemzi: London\u2019s newest rising rapper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This week Voice of London met with Lemzi, whose real name is Alex Lemom, a rapper from East London.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inspired by the likes of Kano, Dr Dre and the legendary Eminem, the UK hip-hop artist has been active in the rap and grime scene since 2016 when he chose to take on music full-time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lemzi uses his music as a tool of self-expression and writes about concepts and narratives that his audience can relate to. Lemzi\u2019s music raises awareness on issues that affect London culture such as the wealth gap and mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Born and raised in Leytonstone, Lemzi went to University of Manchester to study Law and Criminology but changed career paths after graduation, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cafter I finished my degree I decided to take my music more seriously and turn it into a career. I want to express my ideology through my art therefore I rap about whatever is making me feel.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32502\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32502\" class=\"wp-image-32502\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-11-at-14.48.40.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"228\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cI want my music to be heard across the globe.\u201d \/ Source: Clare Hebert<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His love and passion for rap and grime blossomed due to the growing popularity of the industry in the early 2000s. Since deciding to follow his dream of being a rapper, he\u2019s come far, \u201cI started in studio space and now I\u2019m in new spaces, working around the country with new artists.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Performing with a live band, Lemzi\u2019s audience mostly consists of mature young adults who are attracted to the jazzy instrumentals featured in the artist\u2019s music. During his performance he sang his singles B.O.T.S, Figure 8 Flips and No Stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lemzi is a strong believer in pairing words with actions, especially when it comes to fighting issues which affect London such as the growing wealth gap and knife crime. Therefore, he works closely with different bodies such as youth violence and mental health awareness groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32504\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32504\" class=\"wp-image-32504\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-11-at-14.48.49.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"232\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32504\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to make a difference just through rap, music needs to be paired with actions\u201d \/ Source: Clare Hebert<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The rapper expressed his disappointment in the government and local councils whose efforts to make a difference are futile as they fail to see how these issues affect victims on a personal level, \u201cChicken Box was just a PR stunt, there are no actual measures put in place to prevent knife crime among young people in London.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\">The government and local councils don\u2019t understand what\u2019s actually going on in the streets. They don\u2019t talk to the victims.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lemzi also raps about spirituality, relationships and enjoying yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lemzi plans to release more music in 2020 with the aim of taking his music worldwide. He wants to spread his ideas and concepts. The UK rapper is making moves in both the rap game as well as helping social issues in and around London.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lemzi will be one to watch in the UK
