{"id":34362,"date":"2019-11-27T19:15:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T19:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=34362"},"modified":"2019-11-27T19:15:36","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T19:15:36","slug":"vue-cinemas-ban-on-blue-story-could-have-negative-effect-on-london-youth-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/vue-cinemas-ban-on-blue-story-could-have-negative-effect-on-london-youth-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Vue Cinemas\u2019 ban on Blue Story could have negative effect on London youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Update: In response to the growing backlash about Vue Cinemas&#8217; ban on Blue Story, Chief Executive Tim Richards agreed to resume screenings of the film on 29 November 2019 with an increase in security at locations that have previously had issues.\u00a0<\/em> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A massive fight broke out at a Vue Cinemas in Manchester on 23 November 2019, resulting in the arrest of five teenagers, the facial injuries of seven police officers and the banning of all screenings of the new film, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i>Blue Story<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The cinema chain officially banned all viewings of the major-motion picture &#8211; which focuses heavily on South London\u2019s gang violence &#8211; immediately following the incident, now dubbed the \u2018machete brawl\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5askXpPvUeA&amp;w=560&amp;h=315]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A Vue Cinemas spokesman said during an official statement released on Sunday 24 November: &#8220;We can confirm a decision was made to remove the film. The safety and welfare of our customers and staff is always our first priority.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rapman, the film\u2019s writer and director, doesn\u2019t understand why Vue Cinemas decided to ban the film at all 91 locations across the UK and Ireland and feels this is a setback for the youths that he hoped would see the film and would leave the cinema deciding against gang violence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI knew the movie would attract a lot of young people and that was the aim,\u201d said Rapman, during an interview with BBC\u2019s Arts Editor Will Gompertz. \u201cThe whole thing was to have the cinema filled up with 15-year-olds that are literally making the choice whether they should go down that route or go down this route.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The UK has seen a consistent incline of knife crime since 2015 with statistics determining that there were 43,518 offences involving knives or sharp objects in 2018 and numbers are predicted to increase in the 2019 Home Office report.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34370\" style=\"width: 413px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34370\" class=\"wp-image-34370\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/11\/Untitled-Project-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"665\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/11\/Untitled-Project-2-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/11\/Untitled-Project-2-1-182x300.jpg 182w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/11\/Untitled-Project-2-1-768x1265.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Home Office<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">London Assembly Police and Crime Committee estimates that there are more than 200 gangs across London\u2019s 33 boroughs. Chairman Steve O\u2019Connell stated: &#8220;The overwhelming use of knives in these killings presents a severe challenge to the police and our community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDid I think that there were gonna be people pulling out machetes for a film? Of course not. And as far as I\u2019m concerned, no one pulled out a machete because of Blue Story anyway,\u201d said Rapman. \u201cI hope blame is placed with the individuals and not an indictment of the film itself\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Showcase Cinemas initially banned the movie as well but reversed their decision a few days later. However, Vue Cinemas stands behind their decision to forfeit all showings of the film following 25 \u2018significant incidents\u2019 at 16 locations on the film&#8217;s\u00a022 November release date. They claim all situations involved people who were \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">watching, buying tickets for, going in to watch or leaving screenings\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rapman believes that Vue Cinemas is unfairly pinning violent crimes on the film and is publicly demanding more details on the other incidents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In another interview with BBC Breakfast, Rapman said: &#8220;They say that there&#8217;s been a number of incidents, but where&#8217;s the proof? Where&#8217;s the evidence? We live in a camera generation now. If anything happens, the youth are going to film that and you will see it.
