A clich\u00e9 question<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I know<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ut one with<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ever-growing relevance. The expression became popularised as a result of Christmas commercialis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> back in the 1850s. Yep. Since the mid-19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> century we\u2019ve been spending the holidays as a way to demonstrate greed and materialism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2019, the phrase seems to be of even more importance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">extravagant lights dotted around the city, elaborate window displays strewn along Oxford Street, advertisements for the latest and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lavish gifts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s easy to get swept into the 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> century model of what \u2018Christmas\u2019 really is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an effort to dispel the modernity and affluence that drowns our yearly festivities, there are many small actions each one of us can take to commemorate the true meaning of Christmas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Join the Christmas Lunch Campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34434 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/11\/photo-1454875392665-2ac2c85e8d3e-e1574955699621.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"352\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Age UK <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have been running their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ageuk.org.uk\/westminster\/about-us\/news\/news-articles\/2019\/christ\/\">Christmas Lunch Campaign<\/a> for a number of years now. Their aim is to help the elderly who often find themselves alone and isolated during the Christmas period. The project enables residents to spend time with others, get a hot meal and receive gifts and goodies. Relying solely on donations and volunteers, their website advises on how you can fundraise and the importance of helping ageing residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Purchase a gift from &#8216;The Crisis Wishlist&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34436 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2019\/11\/photo-1542367787-4baf35f3037d-e1574956143353.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"371\" height=\"317\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crisis <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is one of Britain\u2019s leading charities attempting to end homelessness across the country. With an aim to provide a happy and wholesome holiday to those less-privileged, they have released their annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisis.org.uk\/get-involved\/donate-gifts-in-kind\/christmas-wishlist-london\/\">Christmas Wishlist<\/a>. Perfect for spreading that goodwill through the office, the process works by purchasing Giving Tree Tags, which are provided to you with an individual child\u2019s name and their desired gift.
