{"id":35724,"date":"2019-12-08T14:02:01","date_gmt":"2019-12-08T14:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=35724"},"modified":"2019-12-08T14:02:01","modified_gmt":"2019-12-08T14:02:01","slug":"sex-education-should-be-reinforced-at-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/sex-education-should-be-reinforced-at-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex education should be reinforced at universities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1DrFbD6Acv97WOf3KJzik_izwufcv5nPbVbJiB8wzWlE\/edit#gid=213156821\">survey<\/a> has shown that 50% of the participants believe that sexual education should be fortified at a university level. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One respondent wrote, \u201cmaybe not actually classes but posters and workshops about more advanced things like STIs and STDs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, 23% of participants thought that it should not be\u00a0taught at university, as knowledge on sexual education would be there already and that it was too late to try to teach it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBy the time people reach university, they are adults\u2026 the impact would not be as beneficial, as it was taught before children become sexually active. Most mistakes are made during the teen years when they are exploring.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The last 27% of participants were neither for nor against sexual education being taught at university. Despite this, many of them wanted there to be a seminar, where sexual education should be reinforced, especially that of STDs and safe sex practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All of the participants thought that sexual education should be taught at the secondary school level. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One participant who works with children wrote that \u201cIn working with young people, I\u2019ve learnt that they tend to be more curious about information that is concealed, prohibited and or considered taboo. Teaching sexual education will help them to make wiser decisions and be more open to share their thoughts and get guidance on the topic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most respondents believed that sexual education is supposed to be\u00a0taught in the early teens, when the children are beginning to go through the process of puberty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> One participant said that \u201c it [sexual education] should be introduced at [in] its simplest form from the age of 8\u201d, while another wrote \u201cfrom the time they understand you, like around age 2, teach them about inappropriate touching.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even though university is\u00a0too late to begin teaching on the topic of sex education, some form of reinforcing should be done for first year students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Words by: Kenya Best<\/p>\n<p>Image by: Kenya Best<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent survey has shown that 50% of the participants believe that sexual education should be fortified at a university level.
