{"id":37725,"date":"2020-10-24T09:00:24","date_gmt":"2020-10-24T08:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=37725"},"modified":"2020-10-24T09:00:24","modified_gmt":"2020-10-24T08:00:24","slug":"black-history-month-blm-the-lives-lost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/black-history-month-blm-the-lives-lost\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month: BLM \u2013 the lives lost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>VoL remembers the Black lives lost this year which have triggered Black Lives Matter protests across the globe against racism and police brutality. <\/b><\/p>\n<p>A world where a pandemic has changed our way of living, racial injustice and police brutality have been brought to the light. People have lost loved ones at the hands of the ones we trust to protect us.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On 13 March 2020, <strong>Breonna Taylor<\/strong> was shot six times when police forces entered her apartment, in Louisville, Kentucky.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The officers who forced their way into the hospital worker&#8217;s home were conducting a search warrant as part of a drug investigation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They entered her flat after midnight on 13 March while she was in bed with her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The investigation was shut down after the shooting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of the police officers who shot Taylor has been charged with wanton endangerment for firing into a neighbour&#8217;s home &#8211; not with Ms Taylor&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To this day, the other two police officers have not been charged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37745\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37745\" class=\"size-large wp-image-37745\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/10\/mattia-faloretti-iSIaOcFWu44-unsplash-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Unsplash by Mattia Faloretti<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Daniel Prude<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was killed on 23 March 2020. His death was only reported in early September.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Prude\u2019s death was due to \u2018systemic racism\u2019 said Lovely Warren, Rochester\u2019s mayor, after seven US officers have been suspended in relation to Daniel Prude\u2019s death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was killed two months before George Floyd\u2019s killing, yet no one heard about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 41-year-old man was killed by suffocation &#8211; a rather similar story to George Floyd&#8217;s death, whereas he did not show any physical resistance, according to the footage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mayor Warren said in a news conference: &#8220;Daniel Prude was failed by our police department, our mental healthcare system, our society and he was failed by me.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Prude&#8217;s brother had called the police after his brother had shown acute mental health problems, BBC reports.<\/p>\n<p>He was arrested on the floor after running naked through the streets. He showed no resistance.<\/p>\n<p>He told the officers that he had Covid-19, therefore they put a spit hood on him to protect themselves from his saliva as he was spitting on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>An officer is seen pressing both hands on Mr Prude&#8217;s head saying: &#8220;Stop spitting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The seven officers are now facing \u2018disciplinary actions\u2019. His death has triggered protests worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018Big Floyd\u2019, 46, died after being arrested by the police in Minnesota. He was arrested by the police for allegedly paying with a counterfeit bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">George Floyd showed resistance when the two police officers who arrived at the scene, pointed a gun at him and tried to handcuff him. Once handcuffed, he showed no physical resistance and became compliant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He became agitated and resisted when officers tried to put him in their squad car.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Derek Chauvin, one of the police officers at the scene, kneeled on Mr Floyd\u2019s neck for seven minutes and 46 seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">George Floyd died after being pinned down to the floor with a knee on his neck.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was the father of a six-year-old daughter and he wanted to turn his life around after being released from prison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first protest started in Minnesota, where George Floyd was killed \u2013 the rest of the world joined after a few days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Protests around the world took place in big cities as well as our capital. London saw thousands of people rallying in during the BLM protests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A strong statement shared between all protesters to support George Floyd\u2019s death was to put a knee down on the ground.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37726\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37726\" class=\"size-large wp-image-37726\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/10\/james-eades-ytJVDVQqOLM-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Unsplash by James Eades<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Rayshard Brooks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was killed on 12 June 2020, in Atlanta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another African-American man who was in police custody was shot dead after attempting to flee the police officers in a restaurant car park.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Brooks had fallen asleep in his car in Wendy\u2019s car park where he was blocking access to the drive-through.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was then woken up by police officer Garrett Rolfe, who was the first to arrive at the scene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After doing the alcohol checks, Mr Rolfe told Rayshard Brooks that he had had too many drinks. He then called for back up after checking his licence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Brooks showed resistance as the police officer attempted to handcuff him. They both fell.<\/p>\n<p>As they were on the floor, Mr Brooks fought free from Mr Rolfe and took another police officer&#8217;s Taser. He ran.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Brooks then turned around and pointed the Taser at Mr Rofle.<\/p>\n<p>Three shots are heard, two hit Mr Brooks in the back and one hit a witness&#8217; vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Garrett Rolfe was the person who shot Mr Brooks. He faced 11 charges on the account of Mr Brooks\u2019 death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rayshard Brooks was a father of three, ages one, two and three and the father of a 13-year-old stepson.
