{"id":39215,"date":"2020-11-13T12:06:14","date_gmt":"2020-11-13T12:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=39215"},"modified":"2020-11-13T12:06:14","modified_gmt":"2020-11-13T12:06:14","slug":"will-president-biden-be-good-for-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/will-president-biden-be-good-for-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Will President Biden be good for the UK?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As Joe Biden begins his transfer into the White House and talks arise regarding the President Elects stance on climate change and how his team will tackle Covid-19,\u00a0 we ask what a Biden Presidency will mean for the UK?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boris Johnson received a phone call from President Elect Biden before any other European Leader. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the Prime Minister offered congratulations the reportedly 25 minute long conversation\u00a0 mentioned trade, NATO and democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Johnson announced the news via Twitter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I just spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeBiden?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JoeBiden<\/a> to congratulate him on his election. I look forward to strengthening the partnership between our countries and to working with him on our shared priorities \u2013 from tackling climate change, to promoting democracy and building back better from the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Boris Johnson (@BorisJohnson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BorisJohnson\/status\/1326206254293913600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It has previously been said that Biden finds the PM, the world leader, most like Donald Trump. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, as Downing Street searches for much needed trade deals, a good relationship between the US and UK governments could prove vital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Former Labour Prime Minister, Gordon Brown told Radio 4\u2019s Today Programme on Monday that Biden is a \u201cfriend of Britain\u201d and could visit the UK within his first six months in office. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He added that a US-UK trade deal was not an immediate option but \u201ca possibility over time\u201d. Brown has worked with and is a friend of the Future President.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before any deal is addressed the government will have to think about Biden\u2019s strong links to Ireland. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is also understood that Boris Johnson has\u00a0 assured Mr Biden that Brexit would not undermine the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a statement,\u00a0 Biden&#8217;s office said he had &#8220;reaffirmed&#8221; by UK Prime Minister | CreativeCommons<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The team behind Mr Biden\u2019s campaign success also expressed his desire to strengthen the historic \u201cspecial relationship\u201d between the two countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier in the week, Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg warned that the UK could <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cstruggle for relevance\u201d under a Biden presidency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking to Radio 4 Clegg said, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think the issue is why should a Joe Biden presidency care as much about the United Kingdom, as much as presidents have done in the past, when the United Kingdom is withdrawing from the European bloc, which I know, having spoken to him about it on so many occasions over the years, Joe Biden really cares about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talking about the President-Elect\u2019s views on his Irish Heritage, Mr Clegg said;
