{"id":39283,"date":"2020-11-13T15:01:37","date_gmt":"2020-11-13T15:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=39283"},"modified":"2020-11-13T15:01:37","modified_gmt":"2020-11-13T15:01:37","slug":"students-now-allowed-home-for-christmas-but-are-they-happy-with-the-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/students-now-allowed-home-for-christmas-but-are-they-happy-with-the-advice\/","title":{"rendered":"Confusion over student Christmas break"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As announced earlier this week, students will be able to return home this Christmas, however it will be a bit different than previous years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How will students get home in England?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Students in England will be given a \u201ctravel corridor\u201d between the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0and 9<sup>th<\/sup> December, allowing those who <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/how-to-self-isolate-as-a-university-student-going-home-for-christmas\/\">need to self-isolate<\/a> <\/span>to do so and still be able to get home in time.<\/p>\n<p>Students have been urged not to travel home beforehand as the current national restrictions, in place until 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0December, do not allow pupils to leave their accommodation or term-time address.<\/p>\n<p>Universities across the country have also been told to bring to a halt face to face learning by the 9<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>December, giving students an opportunity to return home once they&#8217;ve tested negative.<\/p>\n<p>Areas of high-risk will be prioritised with potential mass-testing.<\/p>\n<p>The news was announced shortly before the UK recorded another 33,470 cases, the highest number of COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019ve published guidance for students and universities on allowing students to be with their families at Christmas. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GBFREcNPd6\">https:\/\/t.co\/GBFREcNPd6<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b80p19Saa7\">pic.twitter.com\/b80p19Saa7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Department for Education (@educationgovuk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/educationgovuk\/status\/1326417746113015811?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 11, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What about returning in January?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>No plans have been announced as of yet, therefore we are unsure whether students will be able to return or if learning online will become the new norm.<\/p>\n<p>University minister Michelle Donelan, spoke to Sky News: \u201cWe will continue to work with universities and test and trace teams on the return of students after Christmas holidays\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, she did not comment on whether students would have to be re-tested upon their return.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<strong>How does the rapid testing work?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_39290\" style=\"width: 703px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39290\" class=\" wp-image-39290\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/photo-1601055283742-8b27e81b5553-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"693\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/photo-1601055283742-8b27e81b5553-1.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/photo-1601055283742-8b27e81b5553-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/photo-1601055283742-8b27e81b5553-1-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 693px) 100vw, 693px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by: @jcgellidon | Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>A swab is taken from the nose or throat.<\/li>\n<li>Specimen added to extraction tube<\/li>\n<li>Drops of extraction solution added to test cartridge<\/li>\n<li>Wait 20-30 mins<\/li>\n<li>Read results<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Rapid tests will be distributed among universities at the end of November, hopefully giving results back within an hour.<\/p>\n<p>If the result is positive, the patient must immediately self-isolate for at least 10 days. Their contacts will then be traced by the NHS Test and Trace.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to find those people who are not displaying symptoms but are infected with COVID-19.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How are students feeling?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Nearly 72 hours after the government released the details, Voice of London spoke to some students to see whether they agreed with the new government\u2019s regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Amber Jinan, a third-year journalist student at the University of Westminster told us how she felt:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is a good idea, so that students have the opportunity to at least take the test, isolate if they need to and that way be able to spend time with their families. Something that is so important when living away from home; especially as a student it can get hard sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ceile Brown, PR and Advertising student at UOW said; \u201cI\u2019d be happily tested regularly if it meant I could go home and see my family or even to travel more freely\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe Rose, currently living in student accommodation is worried about how it is going to work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think their idea is a good idea in theory but i think in practice it seems a bit far-fetched.
