{"id":39308,"date":"2020-11-14T11:00:39","date_gmt":"2020-11-14T11:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=39308"},"modified":"2020-11-14T11:00:39","modified_gmt":"2020-11-14T11:00:39","slug":"blm-where-are-we-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/blm-where-are-we-now\/","title":{"rendered":"#BLM: where are we now?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Met Police review of stop and search has brought into focus the Black Lives Matter protests this year.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>New data has shown that Afro-Caribbean&#8217;s are four times more likely to be stopped and searched in comparison to their white counterparts. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With Black History Month over, let\u2019s take a look back at how far the #BlackLivesMatter movement has come since the start of 2020.<\/p>\n<h3><b>In America&#8230;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It all started with a video of the murder of <\/span>Ahmaud Arbery<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a 25 year-old unarmed black man, who was killed whilst jogging. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The video, which was taken by a man following Arbery, shows him jogging before approaching a stationary vehicle. Whilst attempting to avoid the vehicle, Arbery gets into an altercation with a man carrying a shotgun; after three shots were fired, Arbery is then seen lying on the ground.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then came the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, another unarmed black man whose life was taken whilst in police custody.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On May 25th, when Floyd attempted to purchase cigarettes with a $20 note at a grocery store, which an employee thought was fake, police were called. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Floyd was arrested and a struggle began following officers&#8217; attempt to put him in the police vehicle. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-52861726\">According to the BBC<\/a>, Floyd, \u201cstiffened up, fell to the ground, and told the officers he was claustrophobic\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43504\" style=\"width: 665px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/blm-where-are-we-now\/gabe-pierce-uw4cssajdtm-unsplash\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-43504\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43504\" class=\" wp-image-43504\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/gabe-pierce-UW4cSsajDTM-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"437\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43504\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;I can&#8217;t breathe&#8221;, a phrase now synonymous with the #BLM movement after the death of Eric Garner in 2014 and George Floyd in 2020. Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@gaberce?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Gabe Pierce<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/s\/photos\/blm?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Unsplash<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Whilst on the ground, Derek Chauvin, one of the officers, positioned his knee on George Floyd&#8217;s neck; despite Floyd repeatedly stating that he could not breathe, Chauvin held it there for eight minutes and 46 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Breonna Taylor, 26, was killed whilst asleep in her home. Officers arrived at Taylor\u2019s Louisville apartment to conduct a search warrant related to a drugs case.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mistaking them to be burglars, Taylor\u2019s boyfriend called 911 and discharged his firearm, which he was licensed to carry. In retaliation the officers shot back, killing Taylor in the process. Breonna Taylor was shot eight times &#8211; she was unarmed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>In the UK&#8230;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite not losing her life at the hands of police, Belly Mujinga&#8217;s death came after she contracted Covid-19 after being spat at by a customer, whilst working at Victoria Station. After a 19 day investigation, \u201cthe police concluded there was insufficient evidence to charge anyone with a crime\u201d, the BBC reports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In June 2019, Shukri Abdi\u2019s body was found in the River Irwell in Greater Manchester. Despite over a year passing since Abdi\u2019s death, during the Black Lives Matter protest, people took to the streets of London calling for justice for Abdi, as well as Floyd and Mujinga.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 848px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-39308-1\" width=\"848\" height=\"480\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/VID-20201026-WA0013-1.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/VID-20201026-WA0013-1.mp4\">https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/VID-20201026-WA0013-1.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While some protests were happening in front of the US Embassy, as well as other notable places in London, protests taking place outside of London directed attention to another big issue &#8211; the honouring of Britain\u2019s colonial past through statues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The statue of Edward Colston, a merchant who was involved in the Atlantic Slave Trade, was notably pulled to the ground, dragged, and pushed into Bristol harbour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whilst George Floyd&#8217;s death can be argued to have set a precedent for reform in a justice system where African Americans are unfairly discriminated against, there is still work to be done. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the UK, a year-long pilot scheme has been introduced as part of an Action Plan to help improve black people\u2019s trust in the Metropolitan Police, which will see the force aiming to recruit 40% more black, Asian and minority ethnicities starting in 2022. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sian Berry, co-leader of the Green Party says, &#8220;it&#8217;s right that the Mayor has recognised the disproportionate way the Met treats black Londoners in every way, and the hurt this causes in communities.
