Police broke up a peaceful protest outside the Speakers\u2019 Corner in Hyde Park today, November 14th<\/sup>, in demonstrations against recent impeachment of Peru\u2019s president, Mart\u00edn Vizcarra.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Former president Vizcarra was impeached by Congress on Monday over corruption allegations, and replaced the next day by Manuel Merino, who is head of Congress. Merino is expected to lead the country through to next April\u2019s presidential elections.<\/p>\n

London Peruvians gathered outside the Speakers\u2019 Corner carrying signs that read \u201cNo to corruption. Merino is not my president\u201d and \u201cEducation is not a business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peruvian public was outraged about Merino taking Vizcarra’s role, with many saying Congress should be concerned with the current pandemic bashing the economy instead of removing the president.<\/p>\n

In addition, Mr Merino might try to reverse Vizcarra’s political reform that bans Congress member from seeking re-election.<\/p>\n

    According to the\u00a0FT<\/a>, Vizcarra\u2019s case has been largely based on leaked messages on WhatsApp that suggest he was close with construction companies that have allegedly been involved in bribery in order to gain contracts in South Peru, while he was a governor.<\/p>\n
