Photo by: @brookcagle | Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In April this year the Institute for Fiscal studies states that it is &#8220;a bad time to graduate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They add, &#8220;we are now in the midst of a huge economic downturn. The economy could shrink by between a quarter and a third over the second quarter of this year. This is affecting millions of people who are being furloughed, losing incomes, or losing their jobs entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A surpising fact is that, according to the institute, younger generations are more affected than the elderly and it is called a \u201cworrying time for students.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39875\" style=\"width: 5482px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39875\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39875\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/priscilla-du-preez-XkKCui44iM0-unsplash-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39875\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by: @Pricilla Du Preez | Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As stated by the Guardian,at least 30% of the graduates lost their job offer and \u201c20% of Britain\u2019s biggest employers have suspended their graduate recruitment selection processes and stopped making graduate job offers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Channel 5 News has done a YouTube video about how Graduates struggled to find a job during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Coronavirus: graduates struggling to find jobs during pandemic | 5 News\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eP9cvKFXGpc?start=10&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The salary of what students earn will also be affected by the crisis in the following years. One of those students is Eleonora Copia. The 26-year-old student from Italy is about finish her masters degree at the University of Westminster. She tells Voice of London: \u201cI am very afraid that I won\u00b4t find a job. Ben Mueller is studying Film at the &#8220;Universitaet der Kuenste&#8221; in Berlin, Germany and will graduate in the upcoming summer.<\/p>\n<p>He tells Voice of London: \u201cI am not fearing the future. The film industry might start to boom again next year. Many films and other productions couldn\u2019t be realised and maybe when everything is hopefully relaxed again, they will catch up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the website Office for Students, the government wants to help students and graduates. The government has launched several programs during lockdown to help and support students in these upcoming years. Photo by @Marco Oriolesi | Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Abigail Swain from University of Westminster\u00b4s careers and employability service explains how the university is supporting their graduates. The University is offering different programs as well as help with creating a good CV.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, students can discuss career plans or get help with interview techniques. \u201cCovid-19 has undoubtedly caused major disruption to the graduate labour market and the world of work,\u201d &#8211; Swain says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are still graduate jobs and work experience vacancies out there to be seized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Future graduates will need to take a more creative and agile approach to securing these opportunities, because according to Swain, not all opportunities are advertised.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed published an video with tipps on how to get a job during the pandemic<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Graduating During COVID-19: How to Get a Job (For Students)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UxPDMIfw0hM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Some students might want to find an alternative to a job. For example, applying for a postgraduate degree and continue to study.<\/p>\n<p>Another opportunity is finding an unpaid internship to gain some experience or going abroad like geography student Johanna Faerber from Germany did. Johanna is currently in her third year and is planning to to go to Australia for work and travel \u00a0work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Corona I doubt that I will get a job. I came up with this work and travel idea. I always wanted to go to Australia, and I will have an adventure and time-off before starting the proper adult life.\u201d &#8211; she explains.
