{"id":40161,"date":"2020-11-20T14:10:23","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T14:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=40161"},"modified":"2020-11-20T14:10:23","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T14:10:23","slug":"fleets-twitter-takes-leaf-out-of-the-social-media-playbook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/fleets-twitter-takes-leaf-out-of-the-social-media-playbook\/","title":{"rendered":"Fleets: Twitter takes leaf out of the social media playbook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Taking a chapter out of Snapchat\u2019s book, just like <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2016\/08\/02\/instagram-stories\/\"><b>Instagram<\/b><\/a><b> did only four years ago,<\/b><b>\u00a0comes Twitter with the last to make the additional feature: stories.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/product\/2020\/introducing-fleets-new-way-to-join-the-conversation.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fleets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d &#8212; a hot take on \u201cfleeting moments\u201d mixed with \u201ctweets,&#8221; and perhaps a thinly veiled attempt to throw off the scent of copyright &#8212; Twitter has added stories in the same manner as the other two leading social media apps. Fleets are photos taken in the moment or from users\u2019 camera rolls and appear as circles at the top of the screen for a 24-hour period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In what is seen as a feeble attempt to keep up with competitors, Twitter has created something rather unoriginal. Its story feature lags and does not bring anything new to the table. Snapchat, whose photos are taken in the moment, usually offer a glimpse at raw life in real time, while Instagram stories are meant to be polished and edited in post.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This extension has left Twitter users <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/minajjyogirl\/status\/1328740717649391616?s=21\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">feeling some type of way,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reminiscing on how each platform used to have its own function that the audience would deliberately go on each app for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I liked social media more when platforms had identities. Twitter was for the nonsense. Instagram was for aesthetics. Snapchat was for wylin. Instead of fixing bugs or configuring new filters, the digital platform has opted to change the very core of what it means to use Instagram. What was primarily a space used to memorialise photos of friends, family, themselves and sometimes food, Instagram has become the zenith of an influencer\u2019s purpose: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/11\/12\/21561099\/instagram-reels-shopping-home-screen-tab-update\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a marketplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Not only does the feed refresh and hide old friends\u2019 posts that have yet to be liked under a separate button, but it\u2019s also replaced the page where likes and follows can be viewed with a shopping tool.
