{"id":40992,"date":"2020-11-27T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-27T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=40992"},"modified":"2020-11-27T17:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-11-27T17:00:00","slug":"this-needs-to-end-period-scotland-makes-sanitary-products-free-but-will-other-countries-follow-suit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/this-needs-to-end-period-scotland-makes-sanitary-products-free-but-will-other-countries-follow-suit\/","title":{"rendered":"This needs to end&#8230;period"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Tuesday night, the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.parliament.scot\/bills\/period-products-free-provision-scotland-bill\">Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Bill<\/a> was passed which allows those who need sanitary products such as pads and tampons to access them free of charge in Scotland. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bill also makes it mandatory for institutions such as schools, colleges and universities to have such products accessible.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is a bid to tackle the rising problem of period poverty which affects women and girls worldwide. According to the period product company Bodyform 1 in 10 girls can&#8217;t afford to buy sanitary products in the UK and The Borgen Project reported &#8216;an estimated 49 percent of girls have missed a day of school due to their periods&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>News of the Scottish reform saw a huge amount of positive reactions on Twitter from both women and men alike.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Scotland has made sanitary pads free for every girl child \ud83d\udc4f\ud83c\udffcnow this is great progress! of them were positive and discussion surrounding the topic fuelled the long-standing debate of whether menstrual products should be considered to be a luxury or not.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, social media users began to question if and when other countries will make a similar step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>We spoke to some young women on their reactions to the news:<\/p>\n<p><iframe
