{"id":44259,"date":"2021-11-05T11:59:01","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T11:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=44259"},"modified":"2021-12-20T10:30:13","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T10:30:13","slug":"bonfire-night-celebration-day-in-britain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/bonfire-night-celebration-day-in-britain\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonfire night: celebration day in Britain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Today, Britain is celebrating Guy Fawkes day, or Bonfire night. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Happening every year on 5<sup>th<\/sup> November,\u00a0England is commemorating the failure of the Gunpowder plot of 1605 with a spectacle of fireworks all across the UK.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A group of conspirators, led by Robert Catesby, planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament during the state opening of Parliament, willing to kill King James I and members of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Intending to restore Catholic rule in England, the conspirators failed after the group was betrayed. Guy Fawkes, one of them, was captured the evening before the planned attack, was tried, convicted and executed.
