{"id":44395,"date":"2021-11-12T16:18:16","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T16:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/?p=44395"},"modified":"2021-12-18T14:08:47","modified_gmt":"2021-12-18T14:08:47","slug":"its-just-words-on-paper-are-the-cop26-agreements-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/its-just-words-on-paper-are-the-cop26-agreements-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It&#8217;s just words on paper&#8217;: are the COP26 agreements enough?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The COP26 climate conference has come to an end after two weeks of discussions between world leaders in Glasgow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The summit, organised by the United Nations, aimed to put measures in place to tackle the climate crisis in the coming years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/what-actually-is-cop26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What is COP26?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With activists like Greta Thunberg criticising the conference as a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GretaThunberg\/status\/1456295342253740037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cgreenwash festival\u201d<\/a>, some believed COP26 was not successful.<\/p>\n<p>But what was decided in Glasgow, and is it enough?<\/p>\n<h3>Net zero by 2050<\/h3>\n<p>The first goal set by the UN is for countries to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>That means they will have to phase out fossil fuels and opt for more renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n<p>This is an attempt to keep global warming to less than 1.5 degrees, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/sr15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scientists predict will avoid the worst climate disasters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How do net zero emissions targets vary from country to country? Source: UN<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Mobilise Finance<\/h3>\n<p>All of the measures mentioned are ambitious and potentially have the opportunity to protect us from the worst impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>But none of them will be possible without significant investment in green jobs, infrastructure and technologies.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why COP26 aimed to <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-glasgow-climate-pact\/cop26-outcomes-finance-for-climate-adaptation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mobilise the finance industry<\/a> to put their backing behind a greener world.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the things they agreed\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Do you know what world leaders at COP26 say they will mobilise finance? <\/p>\n<p>Find out now\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>Read the full story: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jIZ6XiOF7K\">https:\/\/t.co\/jIZ6XiOF7K<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RjouhhhAB4\">pic.twitter.com\/RjouhhhAB4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Voice Of London UK (@VoiceOfLondonUK) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VoiceOfLondonUK\/status\/1459634790504800260?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 13, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>What it a success?<\/h3>\n<p>COP26 managed to achieve some landmark agreements, such as India pledging to become carbon neutral by 2070.<\/p>\n<p>Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, has said: \u201cThe world is moving in the right direction\u201d, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/ng-interactive\/2021\/nov\/08\/anatomy-of-spin-how-uk-is-trying-to-frame-cop26-as-a-success\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-59220687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest scientific analysis<\/a>, the goals set at COP26 will only limit heating to 2.4 degrees, almost one whole centigrade higher than the UN\u2019s goal.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Cole-Hamilton, Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, told Voice of London that while some positive targets have been set, they are \u201cnothing like the ambition needed to keep global temperatures to 1.5 degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Speaking of the Scottish Government, he said: \u201cI\u2019ve been disappointed. There has been little effort to seize the initiative and get to work tackling years of missed emissions targets and a failure to tackle fuel poverty.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Many environmentalists share Cole-Hamilton\u2019s sentiment, arguing that the targets are not ambitious enough.<\/p>\n<p>Pippa Jillings, 20, a Planetary Health student at Brunel University in London said: <span style=\"font-size: inherit\">\u201cJust creating a target isn\u2019t a success.
