The Green Party have gained <a href=\"https:\/\/campaigns.greenparty.org.uk\/local-election-results-2022\/?utm_source=vote&amp;utm_medium=nav&amp;utm_campaign=LE2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">32 councillors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the Conservatives have lost some of their seats and strongholds, they are still holding majorities in northern England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 40 councils are yet to announce their results so stay tuned for more updates. 12 London boroughs are also yet to announce their results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To know more about how young people are voting, check out this link: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/i-feel-like-were-always-taking-a-step-back-when-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;We&#8217;re always taking a step back when voting&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does your local council do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Local councils\u2019 responsibilities change depending on where you live, but in general they are responsible for everything in a local area, such as bin collections, recycling, Council Tax and housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local elections take place in the UK at least every four years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/elections-in-the-uk\/local-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">government website<\/a>, councils will either elect all the local councillors every four years, elect half the local councillors every two years, or elect one third every year for three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To vote in a local election you must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Registered to vote<\/li><li>Aged 18 or over on the polling day<\/li><li>Registered at an address in the area you want to vote in<\/li><li>A British, Irish or EU citizen<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Voters can either go to their local polling station, which they can find <a href=\"https:\/\/wheredoivote.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>, or apply for a postal vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(All information taken from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/elections-in-the-uk\/local-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gov.uk<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electoralcommission.org.uk\/i-am-a\/voter\/types-elections\/local-councils\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Electoral Commission<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Featured image credit: Yana Trup<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Words: Yana Trup | Subbing: Argia Hernandez<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Labour has taken three London councils from Conservative power in local elections.
