Many supporters fear for the safety of the players once they return to Iran.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/sports\/liveblog\/2022\/11\/21\/live-england-vs-iran-world-cup-2022\" title=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/sports\/liveblog\/2022\/11\/21\/live-england-vs-iran-world-cup-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On 21 November<\/a>, Iran played their opening World Cup match against England, who won with a score of 6-2. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this football match was mainly characterised by an event not directly related to the game. It concerned the death of an Iranian woman of Kurdish descent, Mahsa Amini, who was murdered in police custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Iranian National Team Joins Protest Of Mahsa Amini&#039;s Death\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oZj0s2IVsD0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Team joining the protester Credit: Rick Storm (TYT)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Amini was allegedly arrested in mid-September for not wearing a hijab properly and breaking the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When news of her death broke out, protests began in her home province of Kurdistan and later spread to several major cities in Iran. The protests have been going on for over two months now, as more members of the public have come out in solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/nov\/21\/we-are-all-mahsa-iranians-doha-world-cup-anger-at-regime\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/nov\/21\/we-are-all-mahsa-iranians-doha-world-cup-anger-at-regime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Protesters have taken to various social media<\/a> platforms to voice their displeasure with the Iranian government. He told press that they respected the protesters and wanted to be their voice by conveying the message at an international level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Iranian football fans at the match continued with the protests before and during the opening match, displaying signs written \u201cWoman, Life, and Freedom\u201d. They even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/63753096\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/63753096\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chanted Mahsa Amini\u2019s name during the match.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protests have been intense both in and out of football, as the Iranian national team bows out of the tournament following a defeat by the United States in the final group stage match. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this game, Kurdish activist Kaveh Ghoreishi shared a video on social media showing residents of Sanandaj city, the capital of Kurdistan province, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/world-news\/celebration-on-iran-streets-after-team-loses-world-cup-match-heres-why-3564759\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/world-news\/celebration-on-iran-streets-after-team-loses-world-cup-match-heres-why-3564759\">celebrating Christian Pulisic\u2019s goal,<\/a> which gave the US the lead in the first half. More social media videos show Iranians in Mahabad city, in the West Azerbaijan province, celebrating the full-time whistle by setting off fireworks and cheering in the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Iranian team heads home, political commentators and human rights activists will closely watch whether the country&#8217;s government will take any action against the players. As seen in the past weeks, the government has been determined to silence celebrities who stand in solidarity with the protesters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/news\/iranian-stars-hengameh-ghaziani-katayoun-riahi-arrested-for-public-removal-of-headscarves\/5176697.article\" title=\"https:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/news\/iranian-stars-hengameh-ghaziani-katayoun-riahi-arrested-for-public-removal-of-headscarves\/5176697.article\">Katayoun Riahi and Hengameh Ghaziani<\/a> were detained by the Iranian moral police after they shared social videos of themselves removing headscarves&nbsp;or wearing bikinis only to show solidarity with the protesters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move by the popular actors to share such videos angered the government due to their influence beyond the Iranian border. For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TuXRHLoz8y0\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TuXRHLoz8y0\">40 actors supported their Iranian counterparts<\/a> by sharing a compiled video on Twitter where they were seen cutting off their hair as a way of protesting against the injustice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other international figures publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranintl.com\/en\/202210150760\" title=\"https:\/\/www.iranintl.com\/en\/202210150760\">denouncing the Iranian government&#8217;s <\/a>action include former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world is watching how the Iranian government will respond to the protests extended to the football pitch in Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Words: Maryam Shahzadi| Subbing: Yana Trup<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fans celebrate defeat to the USA after Iran is knocked out the World Cup.
