{"id":50877,"date":"2022-12-02T19:11:27","date_gmt":"2022-12-02T19:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/?p=50877"},"modified":"2022-12-17T14:06:34","modified_gmt":"2022-12-17T14:06:34","slug":"kanye-west-kicked-from-twitter-after-a-spree-of-antisemitic-tweets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.westminster.ac.uk\/thevoiceoflondon\/kanye-west-kicked-from-twitter-after-a-spree-of-antisemitic-tweets\/","title":{"rendered":"Kanye West kicked off Twitter after a spree of antisemitic tweets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Rapper Kanye \u201cYe\u201d West, 45, had his account suspended on Twitter following an antisemitic post in which he shared a picture combining a swastika with the Star of David.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a follow up story on <a href=\"https:\/\/thevoiceoflondon.co.uk\/kanye-west-is-he-really-a-nazi-sympathiser\/\">Kanye West: Is he really a Nazi sympathizer<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a rampage of antisemitism, with comments such as \u201cI love Jewish people, but I also love Nazis\u201d and statements glorifying Hitler, West\u2019s tweet went too far even for the \u201cfree-speech absolutist\u201d Elon Musk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rapper\u2019s tweet promoting his 2024 presidential campaign said: \u201cYE24 LOVE EVERYONE #LOVESPEECH\u201d, a wordplay on the term \u201chate speech\u201d, which according to the Council of Europe entails \u201cany forms of expressions which advocate, incite, promote, or justify hatred, violence and discrimination against a person or group of persons for a variety of reasons.\u201d In the tweet, West included a picture of a symbol combining a swastika and the Star of David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The richest man in the world and recent owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, 51, had no choice but to suspend West\u2019s account following his dangerous and antisemitic behaviour on the platform. Musk expressed his plans to kick the former billionaire rapper off the site to his followers on Twitter \u2013 reason being the incitement to violence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI tried my best. Despite that, he again violated our rule against incitement to violence. Account will be suspended\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1598546057138524160\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rapper\u2019s shocking tweet provoked even the current US president Joe Biden, 80, to tweet out a statement against antisemitism, making it clear that \u201cHitler was a demonic figure\u201d and \u201cour political leaders should be calling out antisemitism wherever it hides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I just want to make a few things clear:<br> <br>The Holocaust happened. <br> <br>Hitler was a demonic figure. <br> <br>And instead of giving it a platform, our political leaders should be calling out and rejecting antisemitism wherever it hides. <br> <br>Silence is complicity.<\/p>&mdash; President Biden Archived (@POTUS46Archive) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS46Archive\/status\/1598714500286406657?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 2, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Before being suspended, West tweeted out screenshots of one-on-one texts with the new Twitter owner and finally a picture of Musk shirtless with text \u201cLet\u2019s always remember this as my final tweet.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>West was previously banned from the platform earlier this year for due to antisemitic comments and was welcomed back by Musk only a couple weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Reddit, some Kanye West fans have come together to condemn the unjustifiable statements made by the rapper, even sharing quotes and facts about the holocaust and the severity of antisemitic behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021 the rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/09\/europe\/uk-anti-semitism-report-2021-intl\/index.html\">antisemitic incidents reached a new high<\/a> ever since they started being recorded in the UK, according to the CNN.
