There\u2019s no hiding from it, it hurts and it\u2019ll take some time to get over it but that\u2019s part of sport. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lw5Esl4fnA\">pic.twitter.com\/lw5Esl4fnA<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Harry Kane (@HKane) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HKane\/status\/1601874722425372672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 11, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Criticism raged online, as both fans and former footballers, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/football\/news\/12098\/12765849\/england-1-2-france-harry-kane-was-ready-to-take-two-penalties-but-says-execution-let-him-down\">Gary Neville<\/a>, were appalled by the refereeing of the match. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the match, defender Harry Maguire told the BBC that he estimated that there were between<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/av\/football\/63932003\"> 5-6 fouls in the first quarter<\/a> of the game. However, he went on to praise Southgate, stating, &#8220;whether he stays, or whether he goes, he should be considered as one of the best managers England&#8217;s had.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He cited Southgate&#8217;s achievements as being &#8220;remarkable&#8221;, transforming the English squad &#8220;from a group of individuals, into a team.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Southgate does choose to step down following England&#8217;s loss, Thomas suggests that someone such as Mauricio Pochettino, manager of Argentina, would be a great candidate to take over.
