Pamindu Gallehewa, a final-year Business Management student at the University of Westminster, has made a significant impact through his leadership roles and dedication to personal growth. As President of both the Westminster Business Forum and the Sri Lankan Society, he has embraced numerous opportunities to lead, collaborate, and learn. His achievements include becoming the first student to complete the Platinum level of the Westminster Employability Award and representing the university in global programs like Westminster Working Cultures. Through his leadership, academic pursuits, and extracurricular involvement, Pamindu has exemplified the university’s commitment to developing future leaders.
Breaking the Matrix: My Path as a Young Leader at Westminster Business School.
I am Pamindu Thehan Gallehewa, a final-year Business Management undergraduate at the University of Westminster. Currently, I serve as President of both the Westminster Business Forum and the University of Westminster Sri Lankan Society. My journey, which began in September 2022, has been full of opportunities to step into leadership roles, build networks, and make meaningful impacts across the university community. Here is a glimpse into my experience.
Careers and Employability: Building a Foundation
From the outset, I engaged with the Westminster Employability Award (WEA) scheme, which has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. Completing the Platinum level twice—becoming the first student to do so—was a rewarding achievement. In my first year, I was honoured with the Overall Platinum Award at the WEA celebration. Last year, my WEA journey continued with a Leadership Experience Award, which allowed me to connect with Penny Alexandra, CEO of the Baker Street Quarter Partnership. This experience was invaluable in deepening my understanding of real-world leadership. I also took on the role of a Westminster Employability Award Leader, helping other students navigate this transformative program.
Westminster Business School: Embracing Opportunities
The support and resources at Westminster Business School have truly enriched my journey. I have had the privilege of serving twice as a course representative and, this year, as a school representative, strengthening communication between students and faculty. Being a Student Ambassador has also been a rewarding experience, providing opportunities to connect with incoming students and represent the university.
A highlight was being selected for a sustainability tour in Copenhagen, Denmark, fully funded by the Quintin Hogg Trust—a testament to the university’s commitment to global learning experiences. I also had the opportunity to participate in a Sailing Tour organised by the Westminster Business School, which was an adventurous experience as we sailed for five days, navigating through Portsmouth, Yarmouth, Bournemouth, Isle of Wight, and Southampton.
Competing in the Universities Business Challenge (UBC) has been another thrilling aspect, with our team becoming runners-up in my first year and finalists again this year. Additionally, featuring in our BABM official video was a unique honour, and the Leadership Development module in my program has played a significant role in shaping my leadership style.
Students’ Union: Leading with Purpose
Balancing academics and extracurricular activities have been one of my strengths. As the President of the Westminster Business Forum and the University of Westminster Sri Lankan Society, I have worked to foster connections and create value for our members. Serving as Vice President for over 10 societies and being an elected National Union of Students (NUS) Delegate, I have had countless opportunities to advocate for students and build cross-society collaborations. Being awarded the Outstanding Leadership Award at the UWSU Awards Celebration Night was an immense honour that recognised my dedication to leadership across campus.
Westminster Working Cultures: Expanding Horizons
My recent participation in the Westminster Working Cultures program in Hong Kong, where I was one of 20 students selected, was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We had the privilege of meeting CEOs and top personalities in Hong Kong’s business sector. Earlier this year, I also participated in the WWC UK program, which included a visit to Birmingham and insights into UK industry. These experiences have broadened my understanding of global business practices and strengthened my ability to connect across cultures.
Advice to Future Leaders
Opportunities rarely come to you—you have to actively seek them out. Be proactive, engage, and connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Take every chance to learn and grow, and, of course, enjoy the journey.
