For Music Production, Performance and Business BA student James, stepping into Abbey Road Studios was more than just a memorable experience, it was an opportunity to experience the reality of working in a world-class recording environment.
Abbey Road Studios is one of the most iconic recording studios in the world and has played a defining role in music history, hosting legendary artists and productions across classical, rock, pop, film and television. Best known as the recording home of The Beatles, the studios continue to be a leading destination for artists, composers, producers and engineers creating music at the highest level.
We caught up with James to hear about his experience at Abbey Road Studios, how studying Music Production, Performance and Business BA prepared him for this opportunity, the insights he gained from working alongside industry professionals and how the experience has influenced his ambitions for the future.
Stepping into Abbey Road Studios
Walking into Abbey Road Studios for the first time as more than just a visitor was surreal. I’d grown up seeing the place in documentaries and music videos, so stepping through the doors for a professional purpose felt like a real turning point. It was a real chance to test everything I’d been learning.
My time there was spent shadowing composer and producer Guy Farley and his team. I got to see how a large crew prepares for a session, sets up microphones and keeps everything running smoothly when you’ve got a room full of some of the most in-demand session musicians in the world. There was a different level of focus in that space; the schedule is tight, the expectations are high, and everyone is at the top of their game. Being able to slot into that environment, contribute and help keep things moving taught me a lot about professionalism, communication and attention to detail.
Taking my learning from Westminster into the industry
Spending so much time in the university studios beforehand really paid off. The technical side of things, signal flow, gain staging, DAW workflow and session etiquette already felt familiar. That meant I could focus more on the music, the people and the overall pace of the session, which made the whole experience even more valuable. Because we work on industry-standard equipment at uni, there wasn’t this huge jump when I walked into a place like Abbey Road.
The course’s emphasis on collaboration and real-world projects also prepared me. I’ve worked with bands, vocalists and producers across different styles, from jazz and hip-hop to metal. This session had its own twist: we were recording Guy’s arrangement of “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra with esteemed UK jazz vocalist Jo Harrop for a TV advert. Seeing that come together at Abbey Road was something special.
A new approach to my creative work
The whole Abbey Road experience has made me think a lot about my own workflow in the studio. It pushed me to raise my standards, both technically and creatively. The level of attention to detail and the intentional choices behind every technical decision really stood out. For example, not just grabbing a certain microphone because it’s the most famous or expensive, but actually hearing the sound in your head first and then choosing the tools to match. It also showed me that the gap between being a student and working in the industry is smaller than it sometimes feels, as long as you’re prepared and willing to learn.
In terms of future goals, that experience has definitely reinforced my desire to build a career that balances studio work, my own projects and collaboration with other artists. I’m continuing to develop my work as a producer and bandleader, and this has given me the confidence to aim for higher-level sessions and bigger creative projects. It’s also been a reminder of how important relationships are in this industry – how you carry yourself, how reliable you are and how you support the people around you.
Overall, Abbey Road has been one of the biggest highlights of my time at university. It gave me a real glimpse of the professional life I’m working towards. I’d also like to say a big thanks to my course leader, Leddra Chapman, for securing this opportunity. The work our lecturers do outside of the classroom is incredibly valuable.
