At Westminster Business School, students can explore diverse career paths through placements and industry insights.
Aida Dauti, a recent Economics graduate, discovered her passion for insurance during an insight day at Sompo International. This led to her role as a Graduate Underwriter, where she reviews policies and develops rating models while pursuing her CII certification. Aida aims to advance in her career, highlighting how Westminster’s opportunities shape successful pathways.
As my fascination with the industry grew, I applied for the graduate programme at Sompo International. The application process included a series of online assessments and interviews, culminating in a presentation on “Emerging Risks within the Insurance Industry.” The interview itself was surprisingly relaxed and straightforward. When I received the call offering me the role of Graduate Underwriter, I was thrilled! Underwriters play a crucial role in any insurance firm, negotiating with brokers and clients to craft optimal policies.
Currently, I’m immersed in my role as a graduate underwriter on the casualty team, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the past month. I’m diving into the complexities of insurance terminology and concepts (there’s a lot to learn!). My daily tasks involve reviewing new and renewal policies, adjusting coverage, creating rating models to determine appropriate premiums, and inputting vital information from our binders and line slips. I also engage in meetings with clients, brokers, and lawyers, further enriching my understanding of the industry.
This experience has been nothing short of incredible, and I’m eager to continue expanding my knowledge at Sompo while pursuing my CII certification. By the end of this two-year programme, I aspire to advance to an Assistant Underwriter role and ultimately secure a full Underwriting position, continually progressing within the industry.
I am immensely grateful to the University of Westminster for providing me with such pivotal opportunities. Initially uncertain about my career path, these experiences have guided me to find my niche in the corporate world.
