Our Policing BA Honours degree has an interdisciplinary focus with insights from law, criminology and sociology. This will allow you to explore the challenges faced by the police, society and different communities and gain the knowledge required to solve these challenges.
Course Leader Paul Betts says “now more than ever policing requires disruptive thinking and transformative approaches to evolve into a service in which all communities can have confidence. Our new policing programme, underpinned by our research, balances professional skills and critical perspectives to equip the future leaders and change makers who want to join and transform the police service.”
You’ll be taught by a team of experts in a range of different subject areas, giving you a unique opportunity to learn from a number of perspectives. Course leader Dr Paul Betts has 29 years’ experience in the police, in roles including Detective Chief Superintendent, working across offender management, youth justice and counter terrrorism. We are well equipped to give you valuable insight into a career in the police force. We also have strong links with professionals working in the police force, legal sector, charities and prisons.
This course tackles pressing issues in modern day policing, like misogyny and racism, with the aim of preparing you to enter the police force and help bring about changes to policing in Britain. You’ll take part in community engagement projects as part of your studies, allowing you to gain valuable work experience whilst providing important community services and developing new skills.
Not only does this course meet the benchmarking standards of the College of Policing, allowing you progress onto the degree holder entry programme, but it also allows you to keep your career options open if you may be interested in pursuing a career in law. By taking specific option modules throughout the degree, this course includes a route to take the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) for entry into the legal profession. You’ll also gain the skills required for a career in related fields such as the prison or probation services, investigation and regulatory roles, charities and civil service.
Throughout your studies, you’ll benefit from a range of networking opportunities and our strong links with professionals working in policing, other criminal justice agencies, charities and the legal profession.
