In this article, we reveal why you should study the Architecture and Design Foundation programme at the University of Westminster before progressing with your degree study.<\/span><\/p>

1. Students from all backgrounds can join this course<\/b><\/p>

The Foundation allows those who are interested in design to choose a four-year architecture degree that after the first year leads on to their main degree programme. It is an ideal starting point for students who have a passion for architecture and design but who might have not had the opportunity to study art and design in school.<\/span><\/p>

The course is also valuable for students who are unsure about their choice of degree path. During the year they will be introduced to the various Architecture courses we offer. These include Architecture and Interiors, Architectural Technology and Planning and Urban Design. Through practical projects they will be able to find their best fit.<\/span><\/p>

2. We offer practical real-world assignments<\/b><\/p>

The Foundation year includes four studio-based projects, each offering a taster of the various degree options. In the first project, students will be examining urban places, hearing about the importance of design in shaping new cityscapes, and getting an insight into the role of urban designers and planners.<\/span><\/p>

The second project, based in the Fabrication Lab, introduces students to the material and constructional challenges in making new buildings and structures. In the third project, students will explore how creative thinking can be applied to the adaptation and reuse of existing spaces. <\/span>The final project allows students to develop their own ideas in more depth and it will be exhibited at OPEN, the Architecture School\u2019s public summer exhibition. <\/span><\/p>

In addition to these projects, regular instructional workshops will support students in developing their visual and creative skills.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

3. You\u2019ll get to work in our outstanding facilities<\/b><\/p>

Our architecture studios are created to cultivate creativity and to help students to have a safe and innovative workspace where they can develop their projects. We recognise that students spend a lot of time in studios working together on assignments, so the space is designed to inspire collaboration. The studios are positioned at the top of the Marylebone campus, with views right across central London.<\/span><\/p>

In particular, our Fabrication Laboratory provides a unique and innovative learning environment for digital and physical fabrication. We host various architecture workshops there, and it\u2019s equipped with flexible computer-controlled tools, covering a wide range of scales, materials and processes. It also has useful tools such as 3D printers and laser cutters, in addition to wood and metal workshops available for students.<\/span><\/p>

4. We offer industry engagement<\/b><\/p>

Students are encouraged to observe presentations and listen to feedback from visiting practitioners. Each of the Foundation year projects include talks by alumni and industry experts, giving key insights into the professional field. <\/span><\/p>

Students are also encouraged to attend open lectures run by the School as well as talks and events run by professional bodies such as RIBA, located just 10 minutes\u2019 walk away from the campus. To capitalise on our central London location, we also offer guided building tours and exhibition visits each week.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

5. Wider study options<\/b><\/p>

With its strong emphasis on the development of visual thinking and practical skills, the Foundation provides an excellent ground for wider study options. It prepares students <\/span>for the following courses: Interior Architecture BA, Architecture BA, Architecture with Environmental Design BSc , Architectural Technology BSc and Urban Planning and Design BA. It is also an excellent foundation for other degree courses in design. Their portfolio also forms an excellent basis for applications to courses outside of the School of Architecture and Cities.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
