At Westminster Business School, the option to study abroad at a range of Universities across the globe is embedded into all of our courses. This gives students the unique opportunity to experience other cultures from across the globe first-hand and provides a change of scenery from our London campus’.<\/p>\n

One student who embarked on a year-long study abroad experience is Kareem Mahfouz, a third-year Finance and Business Management <\/a>BA <\/a>student who recently completed a year studying abroad at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU)<\/a> and has written the following blog about his experience.<\/p>\n

As a London-born student, the idea of studying abroad seemed daunting, but taking the leap outside of my comfort zone allowed me to emerge transformed. My time at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) enriched my personal and professional development in ways I never imagined.<\/p>\n

Hong Kong stood out as an exceptional destination, offering a wealth of experiences and opportunities. From the soaring skyscrapers along Victoria Harbour to the tucked-away Buddhist temples, lush hiking trails, and vibrant night markets serving some of the world’s best cuisine, Hong Kong provided a truly transformative global learning experience.<\/p>\n

Beyond the lecture rooms, HKBU offers a rich and diverse student body with clubs and societies catering to every interest. The Model United Nations (MUN) club particularly captivated me. MUN simulates real-world diplomacy, with students role-playing as delegates representing different countries to negotiate and resolve global issues. Though the premise seems straightforward, MUN cultivates essential skills like public speaking, leadership, critical thinking, negotiation, and debate.<\/p>\n

Initially, I struggled with the confidence and articulacy of my fellow delegates. During my first MUN session, I remained a silent observer, in awe of their passion and quick wit as they articulated complex viewpoints and parried objections within strict time constraints. Humbled yet inspired, I dedicated countless hours outside class to honing my skills.<\/p>\n

In the solitude of my dorm, I rehearsed opening speeches, refining each word to capture attention and anticipate counterarguments. I worked on my body language and vocal delivery, determined to transform myself. Over time, I noticed significant improvements. By the end of the first semester, I had overcome the initial tremor that affected me during roll call. I became confident in my abilities and knew I could perform just as well as my fellow delegates.<\/p>\n

To my surprise, I was chosen to represent HKBU at the Harvard World Model United Nations, where our team won the diplomacy award out of over 100 universities. As an individual, I won the best delegate at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Joint MUN Security Council. Later, I chaired the Economic and Social Council for the Chinese University of Hong Kong, passing on what I had learned to other delegates.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on my study exchange in Hong Kong, the most significant takeaway was the personal growth I experienced. as I immersed myself in a new culture, language, and academic environment, I enjoyed every moment, yet on a few occasions, uncertainties were involved. Never before had I encountered the idea of being unable to communicate effectively due to a language barrier and cultural differences. Yet, it was in those moments that I felt like I developed myself as both a student and an individual. The personal growth that came from overcoming these barriers was profound and deeply enriching.<\/p>\n
