My Wednesday this week was one to remember. Having a whole week off can sometimes leave you wondering what to fill up your schedule with. Which is why I was highly pleased to spend one of my free days during engagement week on a work placement, shadowing the fantastic marketing team based in Wells Street.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The day began with meeting the fantastic marketing intern Rana, who briefed me all about the general activities of department. It was extremely intriguing to hear all about effective social media marketing, content creation, hashtags, and aligning content with trends and the university’s target market. I then was introduced to two of the event’s planners. As someone who is often told that I’m “too organised,” it was insightful to see that the events team followed very much the same pattern of running and optimising their affairs. A good set of spreadsheets showed me an efficient method of managing time and ensuring that all tasks and deadlines are met, especially those that are dependent on others.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

After this, I got a good grounding on public relations (PR) which was the aspect of marketing I’d never studied before and knew absolutely nothing about. I had the opportunity to learn about how the Fleet Street aspect of the university and how they engage with prospective students in order to make the cold outreach warmer and entice external stakeholders and advertise all the fantastic opportunities and antics within the university.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

After lunch, it was back to social media. This time with Social Media Manager Milly. She thoroughly informed me all about the journey of building the university’s social media pages. I was told about how the high quantity of followers was accumulated overtime and the domino effect of being able to cascade into gaining more follower and boosting the brand awareness of the university through high quality and relevant content. This naturally then allows the great reputation of Westminster to be passed from alumni onto prospective and incoming students. There wasn’t one question that I propelled towards Milly that didn’t result in me receiving an insightful answer. I was also keen to learn about how the team ensure all their content was dynamic, ever changing, and always aligned with the target audience and current trends within the university and London area.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Additionally, to the exciting aspects of the marketing, the virtuous team themselves were what was at the core of my workday and why I enjoyed myself. Being welcomed in from the beginning and given a rigorous tour and being shaken firmly by the hand made it easy for me to feel almost like a member of staff myself. Throughout the entire day, the staff ensure my experience was dynamic, informative, and meaningful to me. Seeing their professional and inclusive corporate culture showed me just why Westminster has such a high student count and even higher calibre in their standards, reputation, and ethos.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Going into any new experience with new people is naturally expected to make anyone feel apprehensive. However, I can honestly say with open heart that I coudn’t have thought of a more conducive way of spending the middle of my engagement week. I didn’t choose to apply for this fantastic opportunity merely to have something to do. But also, to really sample the flavours of marketing and extend my knowledge. By the end of the day, they had helped me achieve just that through them sharing their profound effective methods of marketing the university. If this is what my life will be like when I graduate and attain a full-time job, I’ll be living the dream.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I spent a memorable day shadowing the marketing team at Wells Street. From social media strategy to event planning and PR, I gained invaluable insights.
