Hi!
Welcome to the very first post on our Belonging at Westminster blog!
This is a space where we’ll celebrate our achievements, share our progress around equality, diversity and inclusion, and highlight the voices and lived experiences of our colleagues and students. We want this to be a place where everyone in our community can share their stories —moments that made them feel seen, valued, supported, and truly part of the University of Westminster community. It will also be an authentic reflection of our journey, acknowledging those areas for improvement, learning from the good practice of others, and retaining our commitment to embed equity at the heart of everything we do.
So, where shall we start?
I guess our refreshed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, is a good place. It builds on everything we’ve learned and achieved over the past five years, shaped by honest and thoughtful feedback from colleagues and students about what’s working — and where we can go further.
At its heart, is our Vision Statement, helping every member of our community see how they can play their part in driving meaningful, lasting change. To bring it to life, we’ve developed a clear Implementation Plan that sets out our priorities over the next five years – focusing on areas that will make the biggest difference to the lived experiences of our students and colleagues.
That means continuing our Athena Swan work to advance gender equity, tackling student awarding gaps and reducing pay disparities. It also means supporting progression for colleagues and students and delivering Black History Year and our “Westminster Programme for Enhancing Inclusion, Belonging, and Sustainable Development”. Through this programme we’re bringing our community together – students, colleagues, alumni and our wider community – with events, empowerment programmes, training sessions, and student internships that make inclusion an integral part of everything we do day to day.
