❓ What is Ask A Mentor?
The Ask A Mentor service is a form of short-term mentoring which gives you the chance to have a one-off conversation with one of our professional and experienced mentors. The mentoring team will match you with a mentor in accordance to the industry or career you would like to pursue.
❓Who is this service for?
If you have graduated from the University of Westminster within the last 3 years, or are a current student, our Ask A Mentor service is available to you, regardless of what course you study. We are passionate about matching you to a mentor from an industry you are interested in, so please specify this in your request form!
❓Who are our mentors?
The University of Westminster has over 1000 talented mentors, with 88% of our mentors being alumni of The University of Westminster. All our mentors have gone on to achieve success in various fields ranging from a variety of industries. They are keen to offer you employability support and give you valuable advice to take on once you have graduated.
❓How does it work?
To speak to one of our mentors through the Ask a Mentor Service, simply fill out this short request form on Engage. Here you’ll be able to explain what you expect to gain from this conversation, what your future career plans look like and which industry you would like your mentor to be experienced in. This will allow us to manually match a mentor who can specifically assist you.
❓What can I speak to a mentor about?
The conversation can be regarding anything from industry advice to interview preparation or even career pathway inspiration. Our mentors are here to help you gain confidence in both your personal and professional growth. Typical requests from students include:
- Day to day professional responsibilities
- Tips on how to find a job in this industry
- How to build a professional portfolio
- How to network with industry professionals
❓How long does it take to match me with a mentor?
Usually, it takes around 2-3 weeks to arrange your one- off conversation. Once we have confirmed a match, we schedule a phone call with you to clarify your professional interests. We will then email you with details of your mentor. You will be expected to contact your designated mentor and arrange a time for your one-off conversation to take place. All mentoring sessions are currently taking place virtually due to the pandemic.
❓ Is there a deadline to apply for Ask a Mentor?
The Ask A Mentor service is available all year round, meaning you can apply for a one-off conversation when it’s most convenient for you.
