On Wednesday 22nd November, the Careers and Employability Service held the Goldman Sachs Careers Day, which saw a group of volunteers from the company come to our Marylebone campus and share their insights with Business School students. The room was packed, as the event started with a panel discussion, hosted by the Careers and Employability Service Manager Tracey Wells. Over the course of 90 minutes, the panel covered a wide range of topics including their journeys into Financial Services; none of which were as the audience expected, especially a switch from Broadway aspirations to a technical career! The key message to Westminster students was to take up every opportunity presented to you, even if you cannot see how it matches with your ultimate career goal.
Next the volunteers told their audience of the skills needed for success in their roles, which included listening skills, being organised and most importantly, a willingness to learn. This enthusiasm and proactivity must start early, they explained, and students were encouraged to show their interest in developing their career and in the financial sector early, through work experience, event attendance and networking, and by making use of the Careers and Employability Service!
There was just time for a few questions from the audience, and students posed some great queries to the panel, asking them to reflect on what differentiated Goldman Sachs from their competitors. After a short break and a chance for all to stretch their legs, students were invited to join small group discussions with the Goldman Sachs volunteers, posing their questions on a more personal basis and hearing from the employees about their careers and roles in more detail. The room was buzzing with conversation and networking continued long after the event officially drew to a close.
A huge thank you to our Goldman Sachs volunteers but also to the students of Westminster Business School, who engaged with the employees so professionally and made the most of the opportunity that this event provided.
