Hi, my name is Elishba, and I am the Work Placement Coordinator for the College of Design, Creative, and Digital Industries (DCDI).
I wanted to be a lawyer ever since I first set foot in a court room at the age of fourteen on work experience. Since then, I never let go of the idea that I could make a difference to individuals’ lives through fighting for justice. So, I studied GCSE’s and A Levels that would complement my degree choice, scored some of the highest grades, and then one A Level misfortune at the time left me accepting an offer from a University I would not have otherwise chosen. That was my first lesson in ‘not everything always goes according to your plans.’
The rejection from my first University choice was merely redirection to the University I was destined to be at all along, and I wouldn’t have changed this for the world.
After the pandemic hit, the way in which the creative industry was being ambushed and the effect it was all having on students and young people, drove me to work in Higher Education and do whatever I could to support the next generation of creatives and bright individuals. There are many ways to make a difference to individuals’ lives and the pandemic was just one injustice on millions of students worldwide that I wanted to fight against.
As an alumnus of the University of Westminster, I want to be able to share my own career experiences in the hope that it will inspire other students and reassure them of their own journey. A significant part of this is the value of work experience whilst studying, to accelerate and increase your prospects for after graduation; but also teach you many important life skills and lessons along the way.
Choosing to move my career to Higher Education was my second lesson in ‘not everything always goes according to your plans’, and it taught me that our careers are exactly what we make of them. There is no straight line, no right or wrong path, and there doesn’t have to be an ending if you don’t want there to be one. As long as you keep dreaming a new dream, creating new aspirations for yourself, your motivations at any given stage of your life will keep on taking your career down the most exciting paths rich in learning and new experiences.
I am thrilled to be able to welcome you to my blog series on navigating careers and look forward to supporting you on your career journey as a student at Westminster.
