Radical Pedagogies: A Humanities Teaching Forum

Although pedagogical theory has undergone significant transformation in past decades, this is rarely enacted in either the lecture theatre or the seminar room. This forum seeks to remedy this division, by bringing together education specialists and lecturers to discuss pedagogical theory and praxis, as well as introduce new and exciting teaching and learning possibilities.

The first of its kind in the country, this learning and teaching forum will radically re-address and re-think humanities teaching in higher education. This two day interdisciplinary forum will bring together lecturers from various stages of their careers to critically reflect on current practice, and propose innovative and experimental new approaches to teaching in the 21st century.

The forum will be highly participative, promoting the dissemination and exchange of ideas in a variety of formats.  The aspiration for the event is to inject radical new imagination and tenacity into humanities teaching in HE. It will not take a traditional conference format, as all forum participants will actively engage in activities, workshops and discussions.

Bursaries Available

This event is funded by the Student Projects Grant Scheme at the University of Kent who are offering travel and accommodation bursaries for PhD students and hourly paid lecturers. Please indicate in your proposal if you wish to apply for this funding. The deadline for submissions is 30th November 2017.

Proposals do not need to be in abstract form.

All sessions should be interactive and provide practical activities or engagements as well as some theory or explication. Some will be designed to be accessible for all humanities educators, while others will be targeted at specific subject areas.

You are welcome to submit a proposal in the form of a statement of intention for your session, including whether it is aimed across the humanities or subject-specific, the pedagogical approach, and what activities/interactive elements will be enacted.

We are particularly interested in proposals, which consider pedagogy and gender, race, ethnicity, sexualities, class, ableism.

Individual sessions will be 30 minutes; collaborative sessions (with up to 4 presenters) will be 1 hour 30 minutes.
