CETI Conversations on Education Research

Sarah Chan You Fee, CETI Support Officer, February 19, 2021

The Centre for Education and Teaching Innovation (CETI) will be launching a series of Education Research Seminars in January 2021 – CETI Conversations on Education Research.

The first event, Education Research at Westminster – Strategy and Practice will take place on Friday 22ndJanuary at 12.30 to 1.30pm on Teams and will be an opportunity to find out more about the proposed development of education research across the University and how you can get involved too, discover what research is going on, meet colleagues who are already doing education research and hear how they started.

The series will be launched by Terry Lamb, Professor of Languages and Interdisciplinary Pedagogy and two colleagues and education researchers at Westminster, Julio Gimenez and Doug Specht.

Misrepresentation in knowledge dissemination: How can critical social education help?

Julio Gimenez (CETI) and Doug Specht (Media & Communication)

This presentation looks at recent research and debates on misrepresentation in scientific knowledge dissemination (e.g. Boutron & Ravaud, 2019;  Gimenez, et al., 2020), in particular in relation to Covid-19 (Specht & Gimenez, 2020), and examines the role that critical social education can play in fostering a more critical approach to news on social media.

After a brief discussion of the latest research, the presenters will examine a number of social education strategies that can help the general public become more critical readers and thus avoid the consumption and dissemination of fake news in the media.
