What did social enterprises do to influence the direction of social change, to create a more just social and economic order, nationally and internationally?
Social enterprises supporting women to become leaders and community activists
Social enterprises supported women who wanted to become community activists or set up their own social enterprises. Several examples of women beneficiaries who have established their own social enterprises to support other women were shared in the interviews. These women
“are taking charge of stuff in their communities that help one another, that’s supporting one another, that are giving each other inspiration to do something more than what they currently are.” (Social Enterprise 2).
Social enterprises collaborating with other organisations championing gender equality
SEs collaborate with organisations that support women’s causes, expanding the reach of their support and services they offer. These organisations include other social enterprises, universities, private sector, charities, media organisations and community development organisations. These crucial links come through personal connections, events and even through sharing the same building.
‘I organized an International Women’s Day event in March and I worked with two other organizations. One was a social media organization and one was a community development psychotherapist. Absolutely amazing. We complemented each other so perfectly well.’
