Bugsy Malone is an amazing adaption of the original 1976 musical film filled with all the comedy and slapstick jokes you could possibly want in a night out.
The cast was on point and on pitch the whole night, which is amazing considering they range from ages nine to 22.
I don’t know about you but I don’t know many youngsters who’ve adapted an American accent, intense attitudes and strong vocals.
It’s easy to confuse this production with “youth theatre” but they are nothing if not professional and exciting to watch. I couldn’t stop myself from laughing from the slapstick comedy to the actors talking directly to the audience during a scene change. And the stage was something of itself, the moody set with pop-out bar, sparkling lights for Fat Sam’s Speakeasy and, my favourite, the “bicycle car.”
Now you can experience Bugsy Malone in the newly renovated Lyric theatre and be sure to get there early to have drinks and dinner on the rooftop garden. Or better yet enjoy a drink and bar bites at intermission while gearing up for part two and the finale number!
This is definitely a must see and if you haven’t seen the original movie I recommend you check that out too, if nothing but for the laughs of seeing a group of children playing gangsters, mobsters and getting pied in the face.
