Visit England has published the first yearly review of the Strategic Framework for Tourism in England 2010-2020. The key ambition of the Strategic Framework is to grow English tourism by five per cent, year-on-year, over the next ten years. In real terms this would mean an additional £50 billion in expenditure and an additional 225,000 jobs.

It details a framework for action which will be embedded into all Council policies, programmes and services, but recognises that for the city to develop sustainably, a wider range of actions involving all individuals, organisations and sectors of the city working together is required.

CarbonAction2050.com is an online action plan designed to inform those working and operating in the built environment on how to reduce carbon emissions, created by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) as part of its commitment to meeting the carbon reduction targets set out in the UK Climate Change Act 2008. The portal has been developed over the last twelve months by CIOB members who work in design, building control, education, project management, facilities management, conservation and sustainability. The overall aim is to focus on innovation and best practice that will make an immediate difference on the ground. Issues covered include: design; construction; operations and maintenance; refurbishment and retrofit; skills and education; and leadership.

RICS Land and Society Commission Report

The Land and Society Commission was established by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in January 2011 to conduct an independent inquiry to examine how all parts of the property industry can support communities to take on additional powers and responsibilities in the context of the government’s plans for localism in England. The 14 Commissioners represented a wide range of expertise and perspectives from the public, private and voluntary sectors and included four RICS members. The Commission has examined the detailed experiences of community groups who have taken over and managed local services and land and property assets, and have been directly involved in shaping their neighbourhoods. The Commission has addressed the gaps in knowledge, skills and resources in all sectors that might limit the capacity of communities to increase their powers and responsibilities in line with the emerging legislation. The Commission’s focus has been on the delivery of high quality, sustainable, well-designed places through greater community accountability and involvement. The report contains 24 direct and practical recommendations. RICS and other professional bodies, as well as central and local government, are invited to respond to these proposals. The future of private finance initiative and public private partnership

RICS has published new research looking at the future of public private partnerships (PPPs) in the UK, Australia, Canada, the USA and India. The research was carried out by the University of Ulster and the University of Aberdeen and examines the impact of the financial crisis on PPPs and their role over the next 10 years. The report shows that PPPs have transcended international borders and different government structures to support of economic growth. Although the financial crisis has had an impact on their use they will continue to be an important way of providing infrastructure over the next decade. This will be particularly important if Governments continue to reduce direct spending on infrastructure through austerity packages. The report argues that certain steps need to be taken to address problems with current PPP systems and help establish them as an effective tool for infrastructure delivery.

The 2010 Ryder Cup: Economic Impact Assessment

This research was commissioned to explore the economic impact of the 2010 Ryder Cup to the local, regional and national host economies.  The event was found to have a Total Economic Impact of £84.2m to Wales.  The research was conducted in line with the principles identified in the eventIMPACTS toolkit.

This website was launched one year ago to provide a toolkit of resources to help broaden and standardise the way in which the impacts of major events are measured.  Almost 1,000 industry practitioners are now using eventIMPACTS!  The website is now seeking to publish new research on eventIMPACTS, and thereby create an online resource to capture major event research from around the world.  Registered users of eventIMPACTS will be e-mailed perioodically to advise them of any new research that has been published on the site, along with news of any forthcoming research. The website is also interested in publishing other organisations’ research into major events.

London 2012: Planning for the Olympics

The papers in this special issue of Civil Engineering cover the early ‘planning and people’ stages of the project, from organisation and planning, through environmental and sustainability management, to procurement, employment, safety and transport. A special issue of Civil Engineering on the design and construction of the venues and infrastructure is currently in preparation, and a third issue, examining the legacy of the games, is planned for the not-too-distant future. A wide range of more technical papers is also being published in the specialist parts of ICE Proceedings journals – all of which will be free on-line from the ICE virtual library at www.icevirtuallibrary.com.

Is there a demand for sustainable tourism?

This empirical study consists of two parts. The first goal of this study is to learn more about tour-ists‘ understanding of sustainable tourism. The empirical survey with 6 ,000 respondents in eight countries identifies the most relevant aspects of sustainable tourism from a tourists‘ perspective. Overall the perception is balanced over the different dimensions. Furthermore, five different types regarding tourists‘ understanding of sustainable tourism are identified in a cluster analysis and a potential market size of sustainable tourism of 22% of all tourists can be identified. A choice experiment with almost 5,000 Swiss respondents is conducted in the second part. It shows that tourists principally favour sustainable tourism products. Although there are clear preferences in favour of sustainable products, it can be shown that the respondents are only willing to pay a small premium for the inclusion of specific attributes in most cases.
