Managing the risks of extreme events and disasters to advance climate change adaptation

The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) finds that the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events has been increasing and it predicts that this will continue as the climate changes. The full report is not due for release until February 2012, but the IPCC has released a summary for policy makers that touches on the report’s key findings. It makes for concerning reading, with the scientific community concluding that climate change will lead to heightened risk to livelihoods, human health and infrastructure.
Guide to climate change adaptation in cities

The World Bank has issued a guide, providing a comprehensive overview and high-level insights of key climate change adaptation issues that are relevant to cities, offering examples of good practices and successful experiences. The principal intended audience is city officials and practitioners in developing countries. The guide focuses on disaster risk management, the urban poor and other vulnerable groups, and access to climate finance. The guide also shows how climate change can be linked to other important city issues, such as economic development, public health, sustainability and food security.
Hinkley Point C new nuclear power station: Application to Infrastructure Planning Commission

The Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) has accepted for examination, an application from EDF Energy for a proposed nuclear power station to be located at Hinkley Point in Somerset. The decision and a copy of the application can be viewed online.
Development and use of BREEAM for Olympic Park venues

When London won the right to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the bid team pledged to treat sustainability as a priority. The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) commissioned a bespoke version of BREEAM Â (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology). for use on the permanent Olympic venues, including the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Velodrome, Media Centre, Eton Manor and the Handball Arena. The scope of this bespoke assessment spans the design and construction stages from the pre-Games phase through to legacy post-Games transformation. Developing the bespoke BREEAM assessment method was a challenging scenario. This research paper, published by the ODA, Â explains why BREEAM was selected and how a new, bespoke version was developed and applied. Particular reference is made to two venues: the Aquatics Centre and the Velodrome.

City of London office properties are more attractive to foreign investors than ever before, according to Who Owns the City, the fourth in a series of major studies published by leading property investor and developer, Development Securities PLC. Foreign investors now own 52% of the Square Mile’s office stock, growing from 8% in 1980 and continuing an upward trend seen since the Big Bang. The latest report, researched by the University of Cambridge, reveals that the City of London office market has displayed remarkable resilience to the 2008 global economic downturn.

The Localism Act introduces a new Community Right to Build, giving communities a new way to deliver the development they want. The CECODHAS Housing Europe Observatory has carried out a second review of the social, co-operative and public housing sectors in the 27 EU member states, the first one having been completed in 2007. This detailed report presents an overview of the main trends and issues facing the social, co-operative and public housing sectors in each country, as well as providing national profiles and key housing-related data. This report provides reliable and up-to-date data on the socially provided housing sector in Europe. For each country, there is a brief overview setting out the following information: What is social housing? Who provides social housing? How is social housing financed? Who can access social housing? Recent developments in social housing provision In addition, for each country, there is a statistical information section that includes the following data: stock details; housing affordability information; costs of construction; housing quality information; state involvement; key demographic and employment data; and key indicators on immigration, poverty and social exclusion.
