The aim of the conference was to raise awareness and brief a wide range of stakeholders on the EU’s blueprint to safeguard Europe’s water process. It focused in particular on a number of the technical issues that have been raised by the process including:  the strategic vision for Europe’s water, water scarcity, research and innovation, ecosystem goods and services, climate change impacts, closer integration of WFD- CAP objectives and water footprinting with a view to scoping the issues that enables responses from participating organisations and individuals. Biodiversity skills. Schneverdingen, Lower Saxony, Germany, 25-27 January 2012

28 participants from five Northwest European countries came together to test the first version of a training package for local biodiversity. In a three day programme, the participants tested and evaluated the biodiversity training package for planners, which includes lectures, on-site visits, case studies and working groups. All modules will be presented online on the project website for interested parties to use. Integrating biodiversity into local plans and actions offers many opportunities for local sustainable development. As a result of ongoing decentralization, local administrations have increasing responsibilities for the implementation of biodiversity-related policies.

This conference focused on big ideas to scale up sustainable transport best practices in cities worldwide. In previous years, the event highlighted challenges facing urban transport and key projects that were good examples to emulate. The aim in 2012 was to reflect briefly on past successes and ongoing challenges of implementing sustainable urban transport and development, and then to turn our attention to scaling up for the future.
