ISO 26000 and global governance for sustainable development

ISO 26000 is a new international standard on social responsibility and offers guidance across themes including human rights, labour, environment, consumer protection, fair operating practices and community development. This paper describes the development of the ISO 26000 standard and discusses the conflicts that emerged in relation to policy making, global governance and consequently sustainable development. The paper suggests a number of steps that could be taken to maximise the positive contributions of ISO 26000 to global governance for sustainable development and offers lessons for the analysis of other market governance.

Cities and green growth: Case study of the Paris/Ile-de-France region

This report, developed within the framework of the OECD Green Cities programme, is a pilot case study examining the green growth potential of the Paris-Isle-de-France region. In a context of stiff international competition and internal socio-economic and environmental pressures, green growth could be an appropriate path toward revitalising the regional economy and improving environmental outcomes. Building and transportation are among the urban sectors with the greatest potential. Several emerging approaches to a more flexible form of metropolitan governance show promise, yet would benefit from greater private sector involvement throughout the policymaking process. Financing green growth will require the further greening of public revenue sources and the creation of new ones. Adapting procurement processes and pursuing innovative cooperative arrangements with the private sector could also be considered.

The Stockholm Resilience Centre has generated research insights that call for a fundamental shift in perspectives and world views to guide action in a fashion that reconnects people to the biosphere. These insights help contribute to a broader understanding of social-ecological dynamics and resilience thinking. They are based on peer reviewed publications from the centre, combining and compiling individual publications into ‘research insight albums’. This compilation of Research Insights presents a selection of research findings that have emerged from the Centre since 2007.
